I need to be clear that I'm not suggesting these specific deals are going to be available at your local PCW, they were one offs, but they do appear to be having a big clear out and are being very realistic about prices (which is unusual for PCW in my experience). I think these were ex-display, but were unmarked/pristine and they still carry full manufacturer's warranty and I was assured I can return them to store if there are any problems:

Panasonic Lumix TZ4 (predecessor of TZ6), boxed with all accessories (handbook and software missing). Where DSG stocks remain these are £150. They were asking £99.97 but I negotiated the manager down to £90. They just want these old-stock one-off items gone.

Panasonic Lumix FS3 (camera only). I've just ordered two batteries and a charger from HK for £10.79 so I'll have one of the best regarded pocket cameras with a spare battery for £50 (cheapest I've seen elsewhere is £79.99 in Staples where stock remains)

There were other big reductions there too (including a Samsung NV4 camera only for £39.97) but these were the two I went for. Hopefully you will find something similarly good at your PCW; surely it's worth a look anyway? Good luck!

I tried to haggle my local PCW on an ex-demo TZ4 but they wouldnt budge from £130 which i thought was daft. If they have been told to get shot of them from head office I hope the message has made it to Newcastle.
#4
damn, always wanted a TZ!

Always worth a check at your local store in my experiece. Dont forget, PCW have access to Currys stock levels, so if out of stock at PCW, ask them to check your local Currys (they are owned by same company, and have largely the same pricing structure). Maybe this wont be appropriate here, but I got an 8 GB X-Fi Zen this way last week for £29.97 at Currys (it had been posted on HDUK at PCW!!) ! : )

I'd order an original battery if I was you, I bought two batteries for my canon ixus from ebay they were quoted at 1000mah, and the original is 720 mah, that can take over 400 photos the ones from hong kong on ebay don't even alst 20.

Agreed HK ebay batteries are usually poor and those HK unbranded chargers are know as "firestarters" in the trade. the Staples deal of a new sealed one with genuine battery and charger for £30 more is a better deal.

Maybe I've just been lucky but I've bought batteries this way for several cameras (Panasonic, Casio and Samsung) and have found them to be excellent. Originals and compatibles pretty much all come from China, many from the same factories I suspect.

No doubt there are duff ones so perhaps it's just the luck of the draw?

Point taken and I see references to risk of fire in HUKD threads on various compatibles (cameras, laptops, etc.), but has anyone actually experienced this with camera compatibles? Sony and others have had problems with genuine laptop batteries, so are genuine actually any safer? This is an issue where statistics rather than scare stories would be useful. If a battery is a risk will it be so from new or only as it ages? Or are you suggesting the problem is the charger?

We're not talking about a marginal difference here, eg a battery for my Panasonic FZ30 was £60 from Panasonic but £12 delivered from HK and performs as original.

I have a TZ5 and VERY impressed with it so a TZ4 for £90 is a lot of camera for the money. I have bought many cheap batteries and a few chargers from China and never had a problem with any of them. The latest was a 9 cell battery for my Samsung NC10 Netbook and it performs briliantly.

wow, these cameras are fantastic and such a bargain. the FS3 is an amazing price

could you elaborate? how to get this for 19.97?

Dunno how it compares, but my TZ2 is a fantastic camera. I would recommend Panasonic to anyone.

The TZ5 is fantastic, ive had one for a couple of months now but a friend of mine has just bought the TZ7 and thats even better. The pictures are almost 3D, they have so much depth. Now im pondering the idea of upgrading again

My TZ7 post may help (it needs some heat anyway!):

I brought an fs3 last summer for my gfs birthday and its fantastic, tempted to have a wander over to the local pc world and see if can pick up a bargain. heat added

they had a table with several clearence line cameras on it. they had the panasonic fs6 for 99.97, a sticker said that it was the last one so was tempted to push for a further discount. in the end i thought about it but decided that i wasn't going to bother as it wasn't the one i went for, was only really in on the off chance of getting a fs3.

I think Staples is probably your best bet for an FS3 if they have any left (£79.99 last time I looked). For slightly more (about £85 I think) Tesco are doing a new/exclusive Panasonic with 4x optical zoom (sorry, didn't note the model number), which looks excellent value. Oddly enough this one's lens didn't say Leica on it (but the camera body had the Leica 'L'). Panasonic have licensed the Leica brand so I suspect this could be the same lens but Panasonic may be keeping the price down by not paying Leica the royalty for this model. Definately worth spending a little more on a Panasonic I think - great little cameras.

Good to hear PCW are doing these camera clearances elsewhere too so it's not just my local store. I think you probably have to be lucky and find ones with missing accessories or literature to get the biggest reductions though. One member of staff did tell me they have lots of boxes/accessories in the store room which they can't match to cameras - I'd love to have a hunt through that lot but of course it isn't going to happen. If it was your own shop you wouldn't run it that way!

Tip re PCW clearance prices (the big yellow stickers), while I was in there someone else was looking at other reduced/clearance Panasonics (FS5 and FS6 I think) both marked up at around £119 but they scanned lower than marked so it may be worth doing a check on them. I think the £99.97 you saw was probably the further reduction though. I think DSG staff have discretion up to a further 10% but no more - hence my further £10 off my TZ4. Assumes you can find anyone interested in helping of course!

There are compatible batteries from reputable companies like Duracell.

Nothing at High Wycombe branch except a few digital frames.

No luck in Inverness stores either.

They have been discounting these for a couple of weeks now since the new range of panasonics took over so most stores have already shifted their stock . I picked up ex-display FS5 and a TZ4 for £90 & £100 2 weeks ago making sure I bought something else to take the first one over £100 so I could use the £10 off vouchers I had. I did find another TZ4 today but the lcd screen was marked.

Thanks for that.

My local store has been clearing these for a couple of weeks too but I think they keep turning up additional items as different cameras have appeared along the way. Worth re-checking from time to time.

Agreed. It looked like they had some clearances on SLR's as well, possibly a Nikon D60 but I didnt pay too much notice as I'm more than happy with my Nikon D80 as my main camera

Yep - I can second the TZ5, fantastic camera got some amazing shots with it on manual modes. So, if the TZ4 is anything like it, it should prove a bargain. Heat added.

TZ4 is basically a TZ5 with slightly smaller screen and 8Mp rather than 9Mp. Should do a similarly good job.

Nowhere in London has the TZ4 in stock anymore, despite what Currys' main computer says... A quick call up to the branch shows that they don't have any in stock.

I suspect any which are still around will be ex-display, etc. like the one I found so maybe don't even show up on their normal stock systems. Probably the only way to find one is to get lucky when you go in store (or ask them to look). DSG had loads of them earlier this year just as they were superceded by TZ6/7 so I suspect they had bought a job lot of remaining stock from Panasonic as clearance. I think they were asking £149.99 at the time (ie too much). Bet there must be a few lurking in stock rooms somewhere if only the lazy **** would sort them out and match to boxes!

My local Currys has an ex-display TZ2 (how old is that?) sitting there, camera only but unmarked, not even a battery, asking £79.97; max they would do is another 10% off so I think it may be there a while at that price! Still a decent little camera though if they get real about the price.
#30
Currys dont have enough discretion on price... 10% max is stupid. Somtimes, depending on the manager and his commission, they wont even offer that.

A few months back I was trying to buy a Humax 9200 that was marked down on clearance to £89.97 in all their stores. This one had no box, remote, instructions, nothing and was scratched... but they wouldn't budge on price. I drove 20 miles to another store and got a pristine boxed one with all the bits for the same price and a few weeks later got another for £44.98 from PCW on their half price red sticker deals.

nothing decent in Fosse Park Leicester.
#32
Dixons Tax Free (at airports) still listing the TZ4 but at £139.99, which is too high now.

Would you be able to bargain them down to £99.97?

Would you be able to bargain them down to £99.97?

Doubt it. Shops seem to have 10% max discretion but I don't know if the Tax Free airport shops will haggle at all. Worth trying but often they know they have you over a barrell if you're off on yours hols and this is the last chance to buy a camera.

Battery and charger mentioned in my original post arrived yesterday form HK (that's an amazing 4 days from ordering via ebay) and all working perfectly. Worth bearing in mind if you see a 'camera only' deal.
