Canon IXUS 70 at £105.00

Was hoping that Amazon might drop the price as the IXUS 80 is now out, but looks like it's just gone up there to £126! Anyhow I needed a camera ASAP and stumbled across it at £105 delivered via cam…

Fast delivery too - I ordered yesterday lunch and it arrived this morning! And that was with the free delivery option, not the 'next day' service you pay extra for.

I'm just charging the battery up so I can't comment on the camera itself, only to say it's pretty much the same size as the IXUS V3 I'm replacing in terms of width and height, but it's much slimmer. I'm well pleased with the size and build quality!
The IXUS 70 and IXUS 80 are running side-by-side. I don't think Canon are planning on dropping the IXUS 70 due to its popularity, and having a slimline camera at this price-point really helps their figures.

Good price btw.
Thanks danp,

I've been contemplating getting one of these for a while now. I'd planned to wait until they dropped below the £100 mark, but this is close enough for me! I went for the silver and black one too for that nice retro look.

Don't forget 2% Quidco - every little helps!
Looks like amazon is 112 for the silver+black and 114 for silver (google said 126 when I searched)...so still cheaper at the deal listed.

PS deal was for silver+black, silver slightly more (silver+black much nicer IMHO!)

I have an s9500 which is identical to this in almost every respect. It is a top, top camera. Bought it 18 months ago when my daughter was born and haven't regreted it for a moment. Recently won a D40 and am currently debating which one should go. D40 has the extra flexibility should I want to invest in extra lenses but the sheer convenience of the S9500 is making it difficult. In terms of image quality I really cannot tell the difference in images printed at 7"x 5". Will listen to sensible offers for either if anyone is interested.

CAM2U06 - £6 off £200
I have had this camera for about six months and I highly recommend it. It is very sturdy, and feels like it will last forewver. I have a 4GB CF and 2GB XD card, and rechargeable AAs last for ages.
Zoom is superb, and it is great in low light. Great flash.
But the ability to shoot really decent video with audio swings it for me.
Great family camera.

The fuji is also a lot easier to use

I wouldn't agree with that. The Fuji has an auto mode just like my Nikon D70s does... but, personally, I had to flick to semi-manual settings to get decent results out of this camera. The Nikon works better in auto (than the Fuji) with the camera's default settings.

The Auto mode on the Fuji probably has some customisable setting to get the best out of it but I only had it for a few hours. Even then, this means some more advanced tweaking. There's nothing basic about the way the Fuji handles, it handles just like a dSLR minus some of the benefits.
Personaly i think the nikons are on the heavy side better of with a Pentax dst. Personaly for the avarage person the camera your looking at will give a great service and cost a lot less when you start adding the extra lens and accessories. you'll need. The difference in weight would also be a big plus. The fuji is also a lot easier to use

For those that are interested in EF-S focal length/field of view:

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=167366

I don't think this really detracts from the value of this lens - it's still an image stabilised telephoto which takes over where the 55mm (EF-S) kit lens stops...

Post number 13 is pretty much a good example for people who get confused. Heavens knows why I got myself all confuddled earlier today ... I knew something was up!
For those that are interested in EF-S focal length/field of view:

I don't think this really detracts from the value of this lens - it's still an image stabilised telephoto which takes over where the 55mm (EF-S) kit lens stops...

Well I think I have figured out the confusion. Canon quote FILM (35mm) equivalent lengths ... extremely misleading here. This lens on a digital body will be 55-250mm ...
thesilverfox;1453973
If it's EF-S, it shouldn't have a multiplier effect because of the CCD position ... therefore, this should stil be 55-250mm, not 88-400mm. The whole idea of the EF-S mounting is that the lens pokes back that extra amount to reduce the need for a multiplying effect on digital bodies. Hence why here: http://www.cameras2u.com/Store/s70093/0/Lenses/Canon/EF-S-18-55mm-F35-56-IS-Lens/details.aspx?&IsSearch=y&pageindex=1&CatId=4143&comp=y the EF-S 18-55mm has no "equivalent" focal length...I think the site has made a mistake.

If it was a standard EF lens, it would multiply depending on what digital body you have. My 350D has a multiplier of 1.6x, so the 50-200mm EF lens I got for £150 makes an 80-320mm.

Am I missing something here? Hmm I am not sure that I am! I think this is a little misleading.

The 88-400mm spec comes from Canon's own site:

http://www.canon-europe.com/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/EF_Lenses/Image_Stabilization_Lenses/EF-S_55-250mm_f_4-5_6_IS/index.asp

It's a shame that manufacturers have gotten to the stage where they must add more megapixels because they know that 90% of the consumers in the UK will see the megapixel count and think that it instantly means a better picture. Unfortunately given the fact that small cameras like this have a limit to the size that the sensor can be it often means very noisy images. Especially in low light without the flash.
sarbjeet_;1420847
have a look at some reviews on cnet, they are pretty good to me compared to the other 12mp cameras.

That's true but surprisingly not as good compared to it's predecessor the f31d

Save your pennies and try and get its predecessor the f31d - better image quality.

12Megapixel=worse image quality i'm afraid.....on the plus size you'll be able to print a picture the size of your house (which is dead handy [rolls eyes])
i recommend the second bundle as you get a 4gb memory card and a leather case for £185.99 which i just ordered.

Argos now have these for £99. After much deliberation on the Fuji F480 (see other threads for Asda £50 deal) I decided to go for the 5700. This is an absolute bargain!!! Nearly went tfor the 5800 (8MP) but pixels aren't everything as many sites will confirm. Trustedreviews.com was a great help in comparing features. The 5700 has been excellent from day one out of the box and I cant fault it for this price. Its point and shoot but with better options for manual settings and learning a bit more about photography. The 10x optical zoom is amazing.

Have you posted that as a Hot Deal.....fabulous camera, really pleased with it, inside shots can be a little grainy, but external shots are full of detail and colour

Hi again & thanks for the reply talkshop, sounds like your suggestion is favourite since daughter doesn't do a great deal of long distance driving so free solution best.

Does your solution work for all sat navs or were you talking specifically about the Tom Tom? Anyone know anything about Garmin or Navman? Are they worthy alternatives?

Thanks again:thumbsup:

Its really very simple. You subscribe to the Traffic Info (free initially) and it will tell you where is congested then suggest alternative routes. Very user friendly (no techie skills needed!)

You don't need the traffic info to re-route as you can do it manually.
The traffic info is about £25/year plus GPRS data charges via mobile phone.

So you are stuck in a traffic jam......to avoid manually...

Just select find alternative route>Avoid Jam> Avoid next 100 yards up to 1 mile I think, and it will plan a new route, and tell you to either turn around when possible or take next turning off the route...then just follow the directions given.

You can also just tell it to avoid certain roads, such as the motorway if it's jammed up for miles.
Perdyhorses
Thanks for the replies peeps, could you please just explain how the "reroute in a jam" option works? Do you have to manually re-enter your location & ask it to replan avoiding the motorway (for eg), or does it know what's ahead & advise you to take a detour?

Thanks,:?

I would go for a TomTom One Great Britain version.

TomTom are by far the easiest to use and have good re-routing options if stuck in a jam.

I found it as a discontinued item so I may be able to get the kit at this price. The E410 has taken over.
For 350 quid, doesn't the E-400 only ship with the 35-90 equivalent lens?

John
I have an old Olympus SP2 but I don't suppose any of those lenses are compatible and the E400 ships with two lenses that cover 28-300 in old terms for £349.

I missed out on the Grundig MP4 deal a few months ago (£100 for very similar specs) - anyone know how this compares to the Grundig MP4 player for quality?

Why you bothered about the grundig? They are all sold out everywhere.

I bought one from the grundig site and it lasted 3 weeks! Great little all-in-one device but had a fault (would not power up). Tried to get a replacement or at least a repair but alba/goodmans just refunded me.

Went out and bought the archos 504 and it is far better in terms of screen and build quality, albeit twice the price! Once you add on the dvr station and the other license's for AC3 playback etc the price soon shoots up!

The grundig was a great item for the money.
Archos are the best on the market

great find for a great bit of kit...

Personally I think there are much better phones around the £20 mark.

Could you recommend any? I was seriously considering this phone until I read that.
I had the misfortune of being lent one of these when my other phone was in for repair, they are awful even for a spare backup phone. The buttons just dont feel right and as a whole the phone feels plasticky, it has the "heres one i made earlier" feel about it! The kids ones from pound shops feel better made than this!
Like somebody said earlier if you want a budget phone there are better for your money than this! To make this worth having the credit bundled with it would have to be equal or greater than the value of the phone. Ive just checked on envirofone and they give £4.58 cash or £5.26 Argos for these and i would say that is genorous!

However if you like novelty paperweights then you are laughing!
Its made by Benq-Siemens, although Siemens phones are not as good as they use to be IMO.
