Really great deal - shame I bought mine 6 months ago!
#3
find someone with an NUS extra card to save 5% as well.
#4
It's excelent price. I got mine from Tesco this summer for little bit more (paid for postage). Don't hesitate, rebate is not problem, you will deffo get it.
#5
I really want a DSLR Camera :-( Can't afford one though.
#6
Yay! Thanks for this. Well spotted! Wanted to get one earlier in the week with the Jessops 10% discount for 3 hours but didn't apply to DSLR's, but this even beats that price!

Just ordered one as a 30th Birthday pressie for myself. :-)
#7
Thats an excellent price.. I bought one a few weeks ago (shame) and they were all around £450 then... Very good camera.
#8
This is a great deal!! But I'm after the 30d... Hoping they're going to come down with the introduction of the 40d... Anyone seen any good prices for the 30d? eddie :)
#9
Excellent price! Best seen so far with kit lens.

The 30d body only was £499 not long ago but cheapest now is £539 body only and £598 with kit lens

Jessops in Moorgate are doing them in the shop for £396+ £50 cashback, last i check they had a few in stock. Plus i got a pic, incase if anyone needs with the offer they displaying in the window.:)
#13
Just called jessops and that £396 price is INCLUDING the cash back. So its £446 which you have to pay.
#14
Trust me this is the best price at the moment. I have been after one since I missed out on the Tesco May bank holiday offer.

Not sure about the NUS discount anymore. I am a part time mature student so have one, and I think they have changed the t&c's so the 5% only applies to books, cds and dvds.

I was gonna say! I'd be extremely shocked and surprised if jessops can out do web prices.. They are known to pile on the prices.

Great camera i've been closely watching this camera since I found out about the cashback. Have always wanted a DSLR! They are finally starting to come into a comfortable price bracket.. Think i'll pick me up one soon as an early birthday present for me!

Careful, they are grey imports.

I phoned them some time ago and they confirmed this which is why on the website they give 12 months "In House Warranty".

I suspect you might not get the Canon UK cashback with this purchase.
#23
All warranties on new sales are the obligation of the retailer not the manufacture anyway for the 1st 12months by law aiui.

Just called Tekmo, and they confirmed that their kits do not qualify for the £50 cashback I'm afraid.

I went for an 2GB Sandisk Extreme III from play.com. They're one of the cheapest around.
http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/880499/SanDisk-Extreme-III-CompactFlash-2GB/Product.html

Beware of ebay as most Sandisk CF cards are fake.

This review I found gives an idea of how many images you can store on a 2GB card.... http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/camera/review/124/page_5.html

3888 x 2592 pixels - RAW - 9,8MB - 144 images
3888 x 2592 pixels - RAW+JPEG - 200 images
3888 x 2592 pixels - JPEG - Large - Fine - 3.8MB - 520 images
3888 x 2592 pixels - JPEG - Large - Normal - 2.0MB - 996 images
2816 x 1880 pixels - JPEG - Medium - Fine - 2.3MB - 864 images
2816 x 1880 pixels - JPEG - Medium - Normal - 1.2MB - 1640 images
1936 x 1288 pixels - JPEG - Small - Fine - 1.3MB - 1504 images
1936 x 1288 pixels - JPEG - Small - Normal - 0.7MB - 2836 images

I was tempted to go for a 4GB, but a friend who has a 350D rightfully pointed out that browsing images on a card with that many pictures would be a nightmare and suggested going for 2x2GB cards. Esp as if one breaks, you have another as a backup.

Hope this helps!

sandisk extreme III are great. if you can afford it, go for extreme IV, but i wouldnt trust anything less than the III in my camera
#29
thanks VikJ, I will go for the 2GB one. If I ever run out of space can always just get another one as you're right about browsing that many photos with a 4 GB card.

The battle between Nikon and Canon boils down to personal preference. Go with what you feel is better in your hands.

I have a cousin who recently wanted to get onto the DSLR ladder and i sent him to Jessops to have a play around. In the end he went with Nikon (i'm a Canon user) based on a few points which were important to him.

1) Viewfinder was larger on the Nikon than on Canon
2) Nikon felt better in his hands
3) Price

Will a Canon make you take better pictures? TBH its all down to the person, not the equipment. I can show you pictures by other people who have taken some amazing shots with the kit lens... and others swear blind that its as useful as a doorstop!

If you're happy with Nikon, stick with it.
#33
Expiry at the end of this year is brilliant. I would have enough time to save up for it and the prices may even go further down. Thanks.

Since it boils down to personal preference i tend to go to the system which my friends have already bought in. So I can borrow most of their stuff. :giggle:

Hi all,
Firstly, great find!

Secondly, I'm looking for a DSLR and I was looking at the NIKON D40 (with 18-55) lens at Jessops for £300.

What would be the better camera for novice like myself?! It'll be my first SLR to get me into it so I don't wanna spend loads so it looks like it's either this or the D40!

Can anyone recomment one over the other?

Thank you in advance! :)

find someone with an NUS extra card to save 5% as well.

Books DVDs and Music only. So the NUS site says.

Ash

It's 5% all items and a further 5% on Books, CDs and DVDs.

Apologies.

Both are excellent cameras. The Nikon D40x is more of a competitor to the 400D as they both have 10 megapixel sensor rather than the D40's 6 megapixels. This can be advantageous if you want to print large (A3+) but 6 megapixels is usually enough resolution for most.

They all have a Novice setting so all you need to do is click and as you hone your skills, you can start experimenting with more creative settings.

I personally have a Canon but I wouldn't hesitate to get a Nikon if I didn't already have a lot of Canon lenses.

I personally don't think you'll regret buying any of the 2 mentioned cameras.

'sandisk extreme III are great. if you can afford it, go for extreme IV, but i wouldnt trust anything less than the III in my camera'

your camera (400D) will be the rate limiting step in the speed at which pictures are saved, not the CF speed.
suspended#38
ignore my post.
#39
but if you add delivery on top of the amazon price it comes out as more than the play.com price.
#40

Won't you have to pay a stupid amount for p&p because it's a market place trader rather than 'Amazon' selling these, meaning the play deal is far better?
