Got the recent deal at Comet (albeit with the standard kit lens) for a few pence over £600 and around £580 after cashback - personally think the kit lens is worth having for just over £12 (plus of course the cost of an 8GB Class 10 card for around £8 (this is a 4GB card) and a case that are included in this kit) if you're willing to wait for another deal to come around.

Not yet scarper, but seriously thinking of the Canon 70-200 f4 L USM as a starter (which is one of their cheapest L type lens), but not sure that it's the best all round type lens to go for - there is just so much choice and research to be done for a new DSLR user! This one might be a better all-rounder, but more cash:

What one(s) are you going/have you gone for?

i sold the kit lens as soon it arrived and bought the Canon 15-85mm as a general lens from Simply Electronics .It is a nice lens and 15mm is very nice to have. I also bought the Sigma 50mm prime lens f1.4 - good for low light and indoors shots, especially for portraits. I am after a good telephoto and like you have been looking at the image stabilised 70-200mm f4 lens but it is alot of money so i just bought a second hand sigma 70-300mm DG APO (Macro) lens for £90 until i get the canon.

That Canon 15-85mm looks a useful piece of kit to have and what are your thoughts on it being a good first lens for general photography to start the collection? Had a look into some reviews and it would seem that it is almost an L type lens, in all but name - have you been impressed with the results and is it one that you use most frequently?

Had a look at Simply Electronics and there name does come up on numerous posts, but still kinda nervous about purchasing grey imported kit - I guess warranties is the main issue as I assume that the hardware will be identical to UK stock?

I think the 15-85mm is a great general lens. Not many go as wide as 15mm which is nice for landscape shots. The build quality is excellant and i have been really impressed with the sharpness of the pictures i have taken. The only negative is that it is fairly expensive but you get what you pay for.

I bought both my lenses from Simply Electronics. Although the site said both were in stock at the time it took about 10 days fro delivery. They appear to be identical to UK stock.

This is out of stock at present though not stated on the site.

Just FYI

Good advice and I think I'll go for a similar range of lens selection - was going to order tonight from Jessops, but noticed that none of the discount codes aren't working?
