I have been waiting to buy and find one in stock. This is the deal that I decided to take as the VAT increase will put about £14 on it in a couple of days. I bought the lens I have always wanted (Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM) for £450 inc delivery from London Camera Exchange. This was from a spilt kit.

The Canon EOS 550D digital SLR camera takes many of the features found in professional cameras and squeezes them into a smaller, more consumer friendly body. The 550D's 18 megapixel APS-C sized CMOS sensor is paired with Canon's advanced DIGIC IV image processor to give users superb image quality, unlimited creativity and Full 1920x1080p HD movie capability. The sensor and processor combination offers ISO settings of 100-6400 (expandable to 12800) and the clever in-camera noise reduction technology further improves the EOS 550D's low-light performance. The 3 inch Clear View LCD screen with 1040k dot resolution provides remarkable clarity for both composition with the 550D's Live View Mode and for reviewing your images and videos. Despite being considerably smaller than many Pro DSLRs, the 550D offers a continuous shooting rate of 3.7 frames per second and a 9 point auto-focus system, making it capable of grabbing fast-paced action shots that other cameras may struggle with.

Most good some bad. I know then as I live up the road. I also paid on credit card so hopefully, no problems with getting money back. Another company who was out of stock of the 550d said Warehouse Express is ok.

Good deal. However the 550 body only is available for £499 delivered from a reliable seller from somewhere I don't think I'm allowed to post. Check out some of the photography forums.

If it's reliable then it should be ok. If it's ebay then no. I don't know all the rules but It sounds as though you are talking about a Hong Kong based company. I had so much difficulty in choosing a seller. There are a few who look Uk based but are not. It's a mine field.

My budget doesn't stretch as far as the 550D :-(

So can anyone point me in the direction of a good price for the 450D (body only or with kit lens)?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-Digital-Camera-18-55mm-3-5-5-6/dp/B00131W8IW £449.99 with lens + delivery.

Secondhand at London Camera Exchange http://www.lcegroup.co.uk/Secondhand_results.asp at £399 which I am sure would be negotiable.

You're not allowed to post? Is it a well known auction site?

I don't know if there is an optimum time to buy. I have held off for the 550d for a while now wondering if they will go down in price. However, what I did notice is that they are in short supply and are snapped up as soon as they arrive in shops. Perhaps that is a thing Canon wish to do. They do not appear to be supplying to the demand. I have spoken to many camera store staff who all give the same reply. Not many around.

Hmmm decisions decisions. I know the kit lenses aren't great but they would save me having to buy replacement ones for a while. So do I pay £450 for body and 18-55mm at Amazon or do I pay £500 for body and 18-55mm & 55-250mm lenses at Argos/eBay???

Think I'll sleep on it.

Ps - does anyone know who solid the Argos guarantee is?

How is this a good deal when you can get it with lens for £620? The lens may not be the best but gets you started and is worth more than the difference.

Personally I'm hoping it comes down a bit more. Jessops had it under £600 with lens a few weeks ago.

tbh the 18-55mm had some cracking reviews, its a tidy lens for everyday pics.
Obviously its not as good as a prime lens, but one of those will cost you more than the camera itself :D

The other lens is the canon 55-250mm IS, costs around £130 on its own, so reckon it worth the extra £50. You could always sell it to me for £60 :D

Tbh as I'm new to DSLR's then I won't see the difference between these and more expensive lenses so they will do me nicely. In the future I can see about getting replacements but for now I can't wait on the 450D being delivered this week :-D

550D should be outdated pretty soon, TBH wouldnt spend that much so early in the year.

Your right mate, you;ll find the kits lens takes great pics.. it's ideal for beginners.. Its also good to have the telephoto lens too so you can play around and experiment a bit.
Just don't stick the camera on automatic, and remember to posts some pics in the photo thread when you get used to it :D

Yes it would be kinda pointless getting this then only using Auto.

Whats this about a photo thread???

My 550D arrived today. It's a nice tidy upgrade to the 1000D all round.

As for prime lenses costing more than a camera, get the f/1.8 50mm EF lens for less than £100. It's sharp stopped down and fully open it gives a beautifully small depth of field and lovely blurred backgrounds.

Have fun with your 550D.

I didn't even know that thread existed. I'll see if I can come up with anything worth sharing, but there's an awful lot of buttons and options to figure out first lol
