Canon A640

This weekend only - get this 10 mega pixel camera for £123.98 delivered. Checkout price is £176 (+del) but if purchased between 24 May and 29 May - You will get £60 cashback. Simply send the receipt and camera SN (by registered post recommended!)

Their other cameras in this deal (eg A630) are also competitively priced. You can also take advantage of an extra years warrenty for an additional £4.95.

There are links on the site that explain the deal for cashbak - and thankfully they are cheap already - and havent hiked the price!

Heres a review of this camera:

DPRreview reviewed the Canon PowerShot 640 where they highly recommended the camera and write;
Compared to the other 10MP compact cameras on the market the A640 is an easy choice; there is little if any direct competition. What’s interesting is that for many users the A640 is a serious alternative to Canon’s own flagship G7 (which will set you back over £100 more). If you don’t need the extra zoom (where the G7’s image stabilization is useful) or flash hot shoe, you can get near-identical results from each camera, and there are areas where the A640 actually outperforms the G7. For anyone who prefers to do their own noise reduction processing the A640 is a better choice at higher ISO settings, where the noise and detail retention are both higher. The G7 might be more stylish and have a much better screen, and it certainly makes its huge feature set a lot easier to control, but image quality is - all things considered - pretty much a dead heat!
10.0 million effective pixel CCD for Ultra Sharp Images
4x Optical AF Zoom Lens (35-140mm equiv. On 35mm)
2.5 Inch Vari Angle LCD Colour Monitor Screen plus Optical Viewfinder
Super Close 1cm Macro Mode
Video with Sound upto VGA Spec at 30fps (max)
USB 2.0 and Pictbridge Interfaces
Power - 4 x AA Batteries (Alkalines supplied)
SD Memory Card Compatible
Dimensions - 109 x 66 x 49

outfit includes Powershot A640, 4xAA Alkaline Batteries, 16Mb SD Card, Strap, USB and AV Cables and CD Based Software Package

There may be other dealers selling at near to this price (though this is the cheapest I have seen) - be wary of the fact the camera MUST be UK stock. Some companies use supplies from Jersey and the EU. Get caught out with a non UK model - and you will not receive a cashback.

THIS COMPANY EVEN LISTS THE CASHBACK DEAL DETAILS - AND A CALL MADE TO THEM CONFIRMS THEY ONLY USE UK SUPPLIES AND ALL THEIR CAMERAS CAN BE USED IN THIS OFFER IF APPLICABLE.

This is a repeat of the offer made last bank holiday weekend........where ebuyer was listed.....and stuck the price up from £177 to £212. Not a very nice way to conduct business and a big gamble as they are not guarranteed to send you a UK model.

You cant fail to be impressed with the performance and spec.

Did people ever get their cashback from the last promotion when they went through Google Checkout?

I know I telephoned the people doing it and they said ebuyer would be ok. She did say she would email to confirm it - but never did. However using Google checkout could be considered risky because it does say "no other discounts" in the blurb.

With this company there are no risks (they even show the promotion on their website - and havent inflated the price!) - hence why I posted and used them. Besides, ebuyer don't have any to gamble with!

Just had my delivery notice. Should have my shiny new (well ok black!) A640 on Friday! Will post either way my views on the camera and experience of this company.

Yeah, please keep us updated with how you get on, I'm very interested in making an order.

Thanks very much for the all the info guv.
I ordered after 3pm on Friday so mine won't come until Wednesday.

Take a look at this modded firmware for this beaut of a camera, which includes a live Histogram, battery indicator, RAW file format, Zebras and a whole lot more.
IMO a must have.

whats the difference between this and the a630
#5
#6
Yeah.. this deal stopped me in my tracks... and I had an order in before I had realised.

I already thought the camera was a bargain ~£175. I have had an A80 for the last four years and that has never put a foot wrong, I can't wait to get hold of this one! Forget Samsung et al, grab a Canon whilst this insane rebate is on.
#7
so apart from £30 not mch difference will i really notice the megapixel difference much anyway im torn between the two
#8
I'm rather tempted to get the Canon A710IS because of the image stabilisation. Has anyone any comments to make on this please?
Thanks.
#9
That is about the same reasoning I used between the two. You have a bit better versatility with the 10 megapixel images to pick areas within photos. Plus, you know, the camera comes in black.

I believe the 640 also does Remote Capture, hooked up to a computer. I don't think that is going to be used by most people, but something to be aware of.
#10
The image stabilisation of the A710i is definitely worth considering, as well as the extra zoom.

However it appears the balance of all the quality review sites rate the A630 and A640 as having a better image quality than the A710i.

Do not forget the adjustable screen, it is a very versatile and extremely useful thing, the A710i does not have it.

I suggest that those torn between these models carefully read the reviews of each model at dpreview, dcresource, steves-digicams and imaging-resource.

Ultimately you must decide what features are the most important to you, and base your decision on that. They all have pros and cons.
#11
I bought a A640 and a A710is and had to decide which to keep for myself and which one to give as a gift.

The features on the 710 are great, better zoom and image stabalization BUT the build quility and appearance is nowhere near as good as the 640.

anyone else having problems ordering ive tried 5 different cards

Thanks for the info in here - ordered the camera while in Barcelona at the weekend but didn't have time to post. Now ordered memory cards thanks to guv's post above

You'd probably be better off getting this Camera from Amazon for £5 more as they have the 30day Price Drop Promise which can be very useful
#15
Wow this is cheap, it's just a 10MP version of my A540 (6mp) which I paid around £160 last year

You won't be disappointed if you opt for the Canon A710is. I got one during the last cashback promotion a few weeks ago and it's a great little camera that you won't find a bad review of anywhere. For me personally, the advantages of the 6x zoom and optical image stabilisation of this camera outweighed the extra megapixels and vari-angle LCD screen features of the A630/640 but it's down to personal preference and budget of course. It also helped that I got the A710is for £149.99 from Tecno before cashback.

this is the email i got apparently some issues were around yesterday

Dear Customer

We are aware that you attempted to place an order through Buyacamera.co.uk sometime during the past 48 hours.

Unfortunately we have been experiencing some technical issues with our payment procedure and need to speak to you urgently.

These technical issues may have resulted in your credit/debit card being charged without our systems recording the details of your order and so we are unable to contact you other than by email.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused and simply ask that you call us on Tuesday morning on 01257 426054.

Yours sincerely

i was then worried that i may have placed about ten orders so i emailed back and was told i just had to call tomorrow which is ok because the cashback promo finishes tomorrow
#21
Oh dear - amount has come out of each of my cards :(
#22
2nd reply

Dear Mr

It is extremely unlikely that you have been charged at all, the technical problems we experienced have now been cleared and we are ploughing through all transactions to check if any actually reached the payment gateway before failing, so far we have checked over 200 transactions and have not found one which did!

Under normal circumstances this problem would not have occurred, our system is designed to switch over to a second facility in the event of failure, however we are upgrading our back up facility over the bank holiday weekend. To make matters worse, our technical team were busy on the upgrade and didn't notice the main system failure, hence the email from my personal address.

We are now 99.9% certain that no charges have been made to any cards but I would be grateful if you could bear with us until Tuesday morning and then call us on 01257 426054 when we will be able to confirm the situation.

Yours sincerely

All fair points, though if I'm honest - (I bought a Panasonic LS70 from the US 6 weeks ago with image stabilisation) and on this camera I couldnt see what stabilisation actually did! MAybe I just got a bad one - or Canon's actually does work!

The price for this camera at "buy a camera" is £159.99 BEFORE cashback - so again no price hike - unlike at Techno. (and qualifies for £50 rebate)

The merits of each camera are of course personal preferences - but whatever the choice - this offer ends shortly. I regretted missing out the previous bank holiday - and just so happy I didnt do so on this one. This offer may be repeated - but with nothing on the horizon - thats a big gamble.

Are you sure if you can get the cashback for A710 if you purchase through buyacamera, as canon state on their website the cashback is only availible through jessops ??

http://www.canon.co.uk/powershotpromotion/
#24
thats not what it says - it states only the 710 camera is available in jessops however this works through buyacamera - it did last time as well just got my cashback
#25
Ordered the A630
#26
ordered A640 from Amazon.
#27
Just ordered the A630 from buyacamera.

I've printed my order confirmation out so does that mean i can send off the claim form?

Simply complete this form and post it back by 11th June 2007 to Canon PowerShot Cashback Promotion,
Freepost RLZT-ZCGT-SRUU, PWA, PO Box 659, CHESHAM, HP5 3WN, with your original till receipt
(or a printed copy of your order confirmation email for internet purchases) from your purchase. We’ll send
your cheque right away. It couldn’t be easier††.

Its ok, answered my own question. On the form you have to enter the camera's serial number.
#28
Also whats the P&P speed like of buyacamera?? As the line "and post it back by 11th June 2007" got me a little woried if they take their time to send the camera.
#29
is the promotion still open if i purchased the camera today? As Jessops at wil to price match at #190 -> #130 after cashback?
#30
It better be on today as I ordered mine at 3 minutes past midnight last night!
#31
It expires today
#32

Buy a camera is next day delivery - though that means orders placed after 3pm (I think) on Friday, will be traeted as if the order was placed on Tuesday. (bank Holiday between!)

So it should arrive Wednesday.

!

Maybe not - just got this

Dear Customer

Due to the sheer volume of orders received during the past 24 hours it has been impossible to meet our scheduled despatch times and we must inform you that your order will be delayed by 24 hours.

I rang earlier and was told it might be today or tomorrow, but got an email about 4ish saying its been shipped and it'll be here tomorrow! YAHOO! :)

Now just to get a good SD card as my canon a95 uses a CF card.
#35
Got this earlier:

Due to the unforseen demand for cameras on the Canon Powershot cashback promotion we have oversold on certain models.

Our next delivery from Canon is due Monday 4th June and your order will be shipped from this delivery, we are trying to get the delivery moved forward to Friday 1st June but at this stage due to the bank holiday we cannot confirm this.

We sincerely apologise for this delay which has been caused by the huge success of this fantastic promotion.

Your invoice/receipt which you can print off at http://www.buyacamera.co.uk/shop.asp?action=verifyreceipt&order= is dated within the cashback time frame and the delivery delay will not effect your claim.

Should you wish to cancel please advise by email or call 01257 426054 (mon-fri), however we do not know if Canon will run this promotion again.

Regards

#36
Whoah there - I would be a bit worried about getting the claim in in time!!

Might be best to cancel
#37
The problem is that you need the serial number off the camera before you can send the claim form in and it has to be sent by the 11th June at the latest i.e. be with Canon by that date. As long as they do send it early next week you should be fine
#38
Is it best to get an SDHC card for this camera or will a normal SD card be ok? I guess there will be compatability issues with an SDHC card e.g. using it on a Wii console. Also would it be possible to put the CHDK firmware on an SDHC card if my USB card reader/writer presumably won't recognise an SDHC card?
#39
Yeah, bought a 2GB sandisk Extreme III for £16.99 from play.com, seems like it's the best deal around at the moment really
#40
Received my A640 from amazon this morning, just a quick question, on the instructions it says country of origin Ireland, is that going to be a problem with getting cashback as I thought this deal was strictly for UK models? I can't see there being a problem as amazon were advertising the cashback deal on their website (which I printed off in case of problems!). Nice camera, just waiting for my 2GB SD card to arrive now
