Canon A640

This weekend only - get this 10 mega pixel camera for £123.98 delivered. Checkout price is £176 (+del) but if purchased between 24 May and 29 May - You will get £60 cashback. Simply send the receipt and camera SN (by registered post recommended!)

Their other cameras in this deal (eg A630) are also competitively priced. You can also take advantage of an extra years warrenty for an additional £4.95.

There are links on the site that explain the deal for cashbak - and thankfully they are cheap already - and havent hiked the price!

Heres a review of this camera:

DPRreview reviewed the Canon PowerShot 640 where they highly recommended the camera and write;
Compared to the other 10MP compact cameras on the market the A640 is an easy choice; there is little if any direct competition. What’s interesting is that for many users the A640 is a serious alternative to Canon’s own flagship G7 (which will set you back over £100 more). If you don’t need the extra zoom (where the G7’s image stabilization is useful) or flash hot shoe, you can get near-identical results from each camera, and there are areas where the A640 actually outperforms the G7. For anyone who prefers to do their own noise reduction processing the A640 is a better choice at higher ISO settings, where the noise and detail retention are both higher. The G7 might be more stylish and have a much better screen, and it certainly makes its huge feature set a lot easier to control, but image quality is - all things considered - pretty much a dead heat!
10.0 million effective pixel CCD for Ultra Sharp Images
4x Optical AF Zoom Lens (35-140mm equiv. On 35mm)
2.5 Inch Vari Angle LCD Colour Monitor Screen plus Optical Viewfinder
Super Close 1cm Macro Mode
Video with Sound upto VGA Spec at 30fps (max)
USB 2.0 and Pictbridge Interfaces
Power - 4 x AA Batteries (Alkalines supplied)
SD Memory Card Compatible
Dimensions - 109 x 66 x 49

outfit includes Powershot A640, 4xAA Alkaline Batteries, 16Mb SD Card, Strap, USB and AV Cables and CD Based Software Package

There may be other dealers selling at near to this price (though this is the cheapest I have seen) - be wary of the fact the camera MUST be UK stock. Some companies use supplies from Jersey and the EU. Get caught out with a non UK model - and you will not receive a cashback.

THIS COMPANY EVEN LISTS THE CASHBACK DEAL DETAILS - AND A CALL MADE TO THEM CONFIRMS THEY ONLY USE UK SUPPLIES AND ALL THEIR CAMERAS CAN BE USED IN THIS OFFER IF APPLICABLE.

This is a repeat of the offer made last bank holiday weekend........where ebuyer was listed.....and stuck the price up from £177 to £212. Not a very nice way to conduct business and a big gamble as they are not guarranteed to send you a UK model.

You cant fail to be impressed with the performance and spec.

Did people ever get their cashback from the last promotion when they went through Google Checkout?

I know I telephoned the people doing it and they said ebuyer would be ok. She did say she would email to confirm it - but never did. However using Google checkout could be considered risky because it does say "no other discounts" in the blurb.

With this company there are no risks (they even show the promotion on their website - and havent inflated the price!) - hence why I posted and used them. Besides, ebuyer don't have any to gamble with!

Just had my delivery notice. Should have my shiny new (well ok black!) A640 on Friday! Will post either way my views on the camera and experience of this company.

Yeah, please keep us updated with how you get on, I'm very interested in making an order.

Thanks very much for the all the info guv.
I ordered after 3pm on Friday so mine won't come until Wednesday.

Take a look at this modded firmware for this beaut of a camera, which includes a live Histogram, battery indicator, RAW file format, Zebras and a whole lot more.
    IMO a must have.

whats the difference between this and the a630

Yeah.. this deal stopped me in my tracks... and I had an order in before I had realised.

I already thought the camera was a bargain ~£175. I have had an A80 for the last four years and that has never put a foot wrong, I can't wait to get hold of this one! Forget Samsung et al, grab a Canon whilst this insane rebate is on.

I'm rather tempted to get the Canon A710IS because of the image stabilisation. Has anyone any comments to make on this please?
    Thanks.

That is about the same reasoning I used between the two. You have a bit better versatility with the 10 megapixel images to pick areas within photos. Plus, you know, the camera comes in black.

I believe the 640 also does Remote Capture, hooked up to a computer. I don't think that is going to be used by most people, but something to be aware of.

The image stabilisation of the A710i is definitely worth considering, as well as the extra zoom.

However it appears the balance of all the quality review sites rate the A630 and A640 as having a better image quality than the A710i.

Do not forget the adjustable screen, it is a very versatile and extremely useful thing, the A710i does not have it.

I suggest that those torn between these models carefully read the reviews of each model at dpreview, dcresource, steves-digicams and imaging-resource.

Ultimately you must decide what features are the most important to you, and base your decision on that. They all have pros and cons.

I bought a A640 and a A710is and had to decide which to keep for myself and which one to give as a gift.

The features on the 710 are great, better zoom and image stabalization BUT the build quility and appearance is nowhere near as good as the 640.

You'd probably be better off getting this Camera from Amazon for £5 more as they have the 30day Price Drop Promise which can be very useful

Wow this is cheap, it's just a 10MP version of my A540 (6mp) which I paid around £160 last year

    Thanks.

You won't be disappointed if you opt for the Canon A710is. I got one during the last cashback promotion a few weeks ago and it's a great little camera that you won't find a bad review of anywhere. For me personally, the advantages of the 6x zoom and optical image stabilisation of this camera outweighed the extra megapixels and vari-angle LCD screen features of the A630/640 but it's down to personal preference and budget of course. It also helped that I got the A710is for £149.99 from Tecno before cashback.
