I'm by no means an expert but I do have this lens and also the 18-55mm canon kit lens that you're getting with your camera.
With this one you won't be able to zoom like you will be able to with your 18-55mm lens.
However, the portrait shots and closeups will look 10x better with the 50mm lens compared to the other. When your camera arrives read the manual carefully, particularly about aperture settings and depth of field (or do an evening class in photography - I did and I found it very useful). The key difference to this lens compared to the one that comes with your camera is that this one allows a wider aperture to be used.

10 x better, eh? I've never seen it quantified - I guess you learn something new every day!

How did you get it for £82 from jessops! Been at £88.95 for ages online and £99 odd instore!
Good find op - it has been cheaper than this before both from amazon and amazon sellers, however at the moment it's a great price, heat added.
