I think Shadow1 posted the USM version of this lens, which is a few quid more. Still, great deal.

I suggest spend a little more and get IS lens, it is very useful.

you could get this one

Depends on what you wish to use it for - if you are going to use the 300mm a lot then camera shake comes into question without IS as the higher the zoom the greater chance of shake unless you use a tripod.

Both views are totally acceptable however you should buy dependant on your intended use.

Yes, that last one is by far the best lens taking in consideration quality/price

This IS a USM lens! Maybe you mean the IS version which is a lot more than "a few quid more"

I have the Mk1 of this lens and has served me very well. Although the next step would definitely be one with IS.

Great deal by the way

Has anyone noticed the price of Canon lens creeping up and up. I think the only cheap lens are the none "IS" one's

No and the price graphs for the last couple of years on CPB don't support that statement.

"Date first available at Amazon.co.uk: 1 Jan 2001"
10 years old lens. Will it fit moderns cameras ?
#14
No this is not a USM or IS lens...They are designed for 35mm SLR camera's Not for the new gen dslr's... They work on the latest DSLR'S but they are not the best one's I would prefer to go for the IS lens...
#15
Don't buy this unless you want to use for 35mm Cameras....
#16
They must be displaying the wrong lens in the image as it clearly has "Ultrasonic" printed on the lens which is the USM model
#17
Well Look at the model number they are supplying...If you search the part number in google it is showing the lens is not usm...

Look at the product description in Amazon Page....:

Like the EF75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM, it has a metal ring at the front of the zoom ring to give it an upscale image. It uses a DC motor as AF drive actuator. The optical system and controls are the same as those of the EF75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM. For environmental protection, only lead-free glass lens elements are used.

Terrible lens. Just throwing £100 down the toilet. Would prefer to get the 55-250mm IS for £150-200, at least that is a good investment.
#21
I got a refurb of this lens from eBay (£79) and if Im honest I wish I hadn't, its not great. the 55-250 mentioned above is a much better lens

I have the USM/IS version of this lens and it's very good. Would not waste my money on this though - even though it is quite cheap.

I ask that question as I notices the price 55-250mm lens has gone from £117 to £179 ( with some variations ) since Nov 2010 ( based on sale price of 655 lens) and the 17-85mm lens from £264 to £329 (from Sep 2010 ) but I am sure there are some lens that will be cheaper from some sellers at various times of the year. .it was just an observation I have made

Sony image quality has improved greatly. Image stabilisation comes as standard as it's built-in to the body, and is the only type of stablisation system that will apply to prime lenses. The A55 and A580 are highly rated when people take off their rose-coloured Nik-anon (non-stablised) lens.

Just bought it. Looks like a great deal. Hope it fits my Canon Rebel XT.

No, this isn't a USM lens, and it certainly isn't equipped with IS either, hence the price.

Just gone through the process of arranging to return my 75-300 USM ready to buy the 55-250 you provided the link to, only to discover it no longer appears to be available!

It looks like I'm sticking with (and am happy with) my 75-300 USM for £129. Unless of course anyone can point me in the direction of a true USM & IS equipped lens for around the £150 mark...

This lens?

So, it costs a few quid more, and you lose USM, but gain IS. That sounds like a fair compromise to me...

No its not, thats a pretty stupid, unhelpful and misinformed comment!! SOME people may get perfectly good results with this using a mono/tripod!! Im not saying its a great lens, its not, and IS is better BUT its nice and cheap and may be perfectly good for some.

I have this lens as it came with the camera when I first started out. After only a few months I really wanted to upgrade, even if it was to the 55-250 for the sake of IS.

Bearing in mind the confusion people have been having over USM, at this price... it will NOT be USM.

If you only have £100 to spend then great get this, if you have £150 then get the 55-250, if money isn't really an option then walk away now and buy a 70-200 f/4 L IS
