Zoom lenses are very convenient. The equivalent of two or more fixed focal length lenses in one unit. The maximum aperture of some zoom lenses changes as you alter the focal length, but through-the-lens (TTL) metering takes this into account to give correct exposure.

Developed to succeed the EF75-300mm f/4-5.6 II this compact, lightweight high-magnification telephoto zoom lens covers medium telephoto 75 mm to super telephoto 300mm.

Like the EF75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM, it has a metal ring at the front of the zoom ring to give it an upscale image. It uses a DC motor as AF drive actuator. The optical system and controls are the same as those of the EF75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM. For environmental protection, only lead-free glass lens elements are used.

Personally, I'd spend a few more quid and get an lens with IS - Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Lens £154.85

Great price. Although with my shaky hands could never use anything without IS

make sure you buy tripod with this lens... watch out - it does not come with image stabiliser.
good price though

I tried this on my m8s Canon 450D and he eventually took it back and purchased the Tamron 70-300 which also doesnt have IS but the picture quality seemed better than the Canon lens..

A review of this lens might help some.. Your text here

Decent price, I bought this lens last year from Argos clearance on ebay for about £105 delivered.

As someone mentioned above, it doesn't have IS, I have had a couple of shots without a tripod which were ok and I have seen some good shots by others with the same lens, much better than mine, so it is possible without a tripod but for me a tripod makes all the difference, the zoom is excellent and for the price you can't really go wrong as long as you know what you're getting!

These lenses are fine for summers day shooting, but optical quality will make your shots very average. If you are moving up from a compact to slr this isn't a bad starter to get a good zoom range, i.s. would help but it's still a budget lens. Unfortunately with lenses you really do get what you pay for....

mm very hard choice to make this or a CANON EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS at £127 although I don't think the ,money would matter so much, if it the lens you want and need but it is a great price
#13
I went for the Canon 55-250 for around £127 and its been a great choice, sharp optics and a very popular lens often referenced around the web to as the nifty-two-fifty!....been a great partner with my canon 40d. The IS is very useful....
#14
As said above, good price, but I've got the 55-250 and I would say it's worth getting a lens with IS. Unless you take every photo on a tripod of course :-P

Own this lens bought a few years back for £80, really needs the IS @ 300mm, I see they have a half price deal on a 250mm IS here

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-55-250mm-Telephoto-Selected-Digital/dp/B000V9D5LG/ref=pd_cp_ce_1

Much better deal IMHO

Not really a deal

All other sellers of this lens on Amazon are doing it for around the same price. Amazon are taking the P again by basing their "reduction" on the RRP.

I had one of these lenses once. Was too soft, so got shot of it.

Not a great lens I'll agree, but if you can point me to L series lenses for similar money I'd be impressed!

One BIG problem I have with this site is deals are abstract if you haven't been tracking prices. Is this a good deal now around this price ?

This says it is as its at the bottom of its range.

If you bothered reading all the comments people have. The lens will suck in the novice who think this is a saving, anyone that has used it will will know what poor real world value this is. The problem with this site is trolls seeking attention rather than passing on real world experience and showing what is best use of peoples hard earned money, roll on the soft blury pics from people that bought because it cheap compared to a silly mrrp, these were going for 80 quid on canon outlet store recently

+1 I actually thought the original comment was a pretty succinct summary!

Thanks OP for posting and thanks Andy for posting your deal. Surely IS is almost a must at 300mm...

Then perhaps an "I agree with .... " would have been more helpful than a smartarse flippant one??? Im quite savy with DSLR equipment (and am fully aware of this lens' shortcomings BTW) so shall I from now on just post one liners instead of trying to help people?!?

Exactly my point, so where is the benefit in 300 "good price crap lens" comments?!?! All Im saying is that if you take the time to post, why not make it actually worth your time??

tempted but I think I will go for the IS version for the few extra quid.

The 90-300mm is a terrible lens. I have it too.
It's worse than the non IS 18-55mm kit lens ha
Just a note to other DSLR users, don't assume that all non L lenses are rubbish because that would be an unfair judgement.
However, I would say that in general, the lenses with USM motors are pretty good and worth getting if you cannot afford an L lens.

To contribute to this thread. Even if you are on a tight budget, it's worth paying that little extra for the 55-250mm with IS. Otherwise you'll end up bumping up your ISO to get a shot that isn't shaky.

Used to have this lens - good for a beginner but if you're looking for perfection you're looking in the wrong place. I swapped this for a 70-200 f4 L - never looked back :-D
