  To be fair, I believe the changes are entirely cosmetic.
  
  However I noticed on ebay that used MK2 lenses sell for slightly more than the original version. So, you might be better off buying the MK2 if you have to buy new.

  These are really good lenses for the money, most cheap telephotos get really soft at the long end but this lens really holds up well even at 250mm wide open at f/5.6 the image is pretty sharp, it's a MUCH better bet than any of the non stabilized 7x-300mm Canon lenses. The focusing isn't super fast but it's pretty quiet for a cheapy, accuracy can be so-so but just take a couple of shots, that's good practice even with expensive lenses, you only get one chance sometimes and that killer shot could be the one where even your super expensive lens made a bad decision!
  
  This lens is also very light, I have a 70-300mm L IS and while it is no doubt a much better lens it's much heavier too so when I want to travel light I take the "nifty two fifty"
