I know it's an old camera and I know it's been cheaper before but not today. It's a well respected model and one of few entry-level digital SLR models that lets you compose the picture on the screen.

Use the 15% off code (SALE15 as on their homepage, expires Thurs 31/12) - gives you £60 off their £399.99 price. Go via QuidCo for 1.5% off (tracks at £6) offset by the delivery will be charged at £5.80.

You can find it cheaper but WITHOUT the 18-55 EF-S lens this kit includes

If you want the 2nd lens that comes in the £499.99 kit that's out of stock, Argos Clearance on eBay (look in the outlet section tabbed at the top of the ebay homepage) has them for <£100. Shame you can't save 15% on that too but not bad. That lens is an EF, not EF-S lens.

£376 at Amazon, £365 at Warehouse Express so seems to be a good price. Prefer another make myself so don't know anything about Canon DSLRs - still voted this as a Hot deal though.

eh ehat a dumb statement, what make is better, nikon dslr's are as good though there tends to be less choice re: lens, though their top of the range stuff is at least as good, if not better...other than that nothing is better than canon for cameras or specifically dslr's

What a dumb statement ......... :whistling:

Nikon camera's are preferred by a lot of people. Canon's by others, some even prefer one's such as Sony etc. Just because you are obviously a Canon bigot does not make the statement a dumb one now does it.

Me I prefer Nikon's and have two of them, I suppose that is a dumb statement also

As for the deal - seems a good price

well it is, because you said you knew nothing about canon dslr's so how can you comment on whether its a good deal - it is the cheapest and the prices you quoted were higher!
and what makes you think im a canon bigot? Another dumb statement, canon dslr's and nikon dslr's are excellent cameras....not much wrong with sony or other make dslr's but lack of lens/kits means that arent a good choice for some

I had a quick look at Camera Price Buster, and quoted the cheapest prices shown. So I felt that the price is good (it was a cold deal when I saw it) I didn't think that HUKD required particular expertise before voting?

Just what I was afraid of... this isn't about whether Canon, Nikon or Sony are better than one another. This is a good model based on reviews and much cheaper than elsewhere. I personally own a Nikon D40 which is a great camera, and have used both Sony and Canon - also great. I happened to buy the Nikon purely on price at the time, else today I'd be buying this.

if you are looking to buy an entry-level DSLR today, £340 for this camera is a steal. Yes I don't know what moronic buffoon (and I mean that sincerely) voted this price to -1!

do your research before you buy is my suggestion
I am a Sony alpha owner:
Sony back catalogue of lenses includes all A-mount as used on Konica Minolta cameras from 70's onwards - and they use the Sony's on-board IS system

all dslr's can use M42 mount lenses with the appropriate adapter
this means old pentax, zenit cameras etc - plenty of cheap CZJ primes out there

each to their own

I must confess I have wondered about the various arguments on using other lenses with DSLRs. Some brands claim to have a 'coating optimised for digital photography'. I thought getting the light onto the sensor or the film was all it was about, though I guess the size of the sensor and whether or not their performance is affected by UV or IR could be a valid argument for specific lenses. I guess also that marketers are employed by these people along the way too! :)

check out ebay prices on the old Carl Zeiss Jena flektogon lens - if it is a poor lens, then why are they selling for £80 everday?
#13
I brought this as an entry level DSLR about 6 months ago and love it. It is easy to use and you can definitely tell the difference in the photo quality from a normal digital camera. At this price it is well worth it.

Agreed - chose Olympus myself a few years back when anti-dust systems weren't so common
and have been absolutely delighted with that decision - love the higher grade lenses

however - I reckon that if I'd picked Sony, Nikon, Canon or whatever then my photography skills won't have exceeded the ability of the equipment ... I've seen so many pictures taken by pro's far exceed what I can get with the (in theory) inferior equipment they had to put up with a few years ago!
#15
That lens is just an EF, not EF-S lens.

Some would argue that EF is better than EF-S as it will fit a full frame camera should you upgrade to one in the future, where your EF-S lens won't.
#16
Badly phrased on my part - I know nothing about these lenses and was not trying to imply one being better than another - the just meaning there was no S on the designation! Thanks for explaining... will be useful to potential purchasers (one of which I am not!)
#17
It is. Read the deal post fully.

Brilliant D-SLR. I really want the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1....

Royals,
Why don't you just shut up.

Whats a full frame camera?

A full-frame DSLR is fitted with an image sensor that is the same size as a 35 mm (36x24 mm) film frame. Tend to be expensive

Most budget DSLR's (with the exception of Olympus) have a x1.6 crop factor (smaller sensor). Full Frame cameras Offer the equivalent of the old 35mm SLR frame on the sensor but are a lot more expensive to produce and therefore buy.

Hope this helps

Also Carl Zeiss Jena was the old East German factory, much lower quality than the West German Carl Zeiss (Contax cameras)

showing as out of stock now :(

How long have Homebase been selling cameras?

I had no idea they evn sold such thing - I thought it was mostly DIY stuff for the home
#29
Well they don't. Seeing as they and Argos are the same company, I guess they figured they've nothing to lose by offering both company's products online to some extent - if they sell it as a result, bonus!!

Though in this case looks like they have actually now removed the product. Weird also that the homepage is now showing the XMAS15 15% discount code which expired last week!

CZ lenses are amongst the best. Just think what is on front of a Hasselblad?
#31
BTW, deal is OK, but TBH would spend an extra few quid and get the EOS 1000D with the IS lens istead at £ 379.99
#32
Care to share with all what an IS lens gives you over any other sort? (would help any prospective purchaser - looks like my deal's sold out at Homebase now anyway)

Gutted I missed out on this - been looking for one of these at a good price for a while now, and received a tasty Xmas bonus this year!

I guess that's the price of taking a few days off from the internet... :-/
