Also available from Dixons for 1p less, using discount code AW10 (Takes £10 off)
http://www.dixons.co.uk/product.php?sku=357388&source_id=aw&camp_id=DVD+Bargains
and Laskys for the same price:
http://www.laskys.com/digital_cameras_and_camcorders/cameras/digital_slr_cameras/canon_eos_400d_18_55mm_lens.html?referred_site=ba&refid=affil

But I posted the amazon deal as I prefer doing business with them.

Why the cold votes? If you can find it cheaper, post the details.

Fair play on having a prefered dealer, but both Dixons (3%) and Laskys (2.5%) pay quidco which will save another £10 or so.
#4
Oh yeah, I forgot about quidco!

3% off Dixons makes it £328.44, even better, factor in delivery at 4.95 gives a grand total of £333.39.
#5
Much more like it! The 450d is out soon so they must be starting the discounts now.
#6
The 400D and the 450D will actually run side-by-side, with the 450D placed between the 400D and the 40D.
#7
I don't think Canon will want to be splitting their marketing and attention between two entry-level SLRs... this'll be the same as the 350d when the 400d came out... still available, but cheaper. Though the discounts, as before, are not going to be massive. Still... £328/£340 is still a marked improvement over previous prices! Severely tempted to dip into my credit once more!
#8
It's definitely sitting between them:

"Coming April 2008, the 450D sits between the 400D and 40D"
http://www.cnet.com.au/digitalcameras/cameras/0,239036195,339285420,00.htm

"Instead Canon’s keeping the 400D / XTi on as its entry-level DSLR, and is slotting the new 450D / XSi between it and the semi-pro EOS 40D"
http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Canon_EOS_450D_Digital_Rebel_XSi/verdict.shtml
#9
Yeah, that's all fine, but the 450d's arrival is obviously sparking a discount in older kit as this deal is the simple proof of. I don't dispute the fact they are keeping the 400d as a current camera, but they are also taking some cash off them too, which is ideal for me!

Brilliant camera in my expereince

The 450 does not sit between the 400 and 40d. Canon always bring out newer features in the entry level xxxd first. It replaces the 400d and thats it

And your authority on this matter is??

I think I trust many reputable camera review websites (and directly from the horses mouth too).

Nikon are doing the same, the D60 is to replace the D40x, and is to sit between the D40 and D80. Both companies now have 3 camera's for the amateur-hobbyist/Keen-amateur/Semi-pro. And THAT's final!
#14
This is a very good entry level DSLR camera but as a 'body' only. The kit-lens that comes with it is pretty poor in comparison to the kit-lens that comes with say a Nikon.

So by the time you factor in another lens, the Canon can be quite an expensive option.

And before I get shot down for having an opinion, don't just take my word for it, read the full review here: 400d review (Conclusion)

... with the main 'con' being:

"Kit lens disappointing, better to buy body only and spend more on a good lens"

If memory serves, the body only works out £28 cheaper than with the kit lens. Yes, the kit lens has it critics but I personally feel it's worth £28...

I've just bought the following from Currys:
CANON EOS 40D 17-85IS
LOWEPRO UK ALTUS 140 WBW
PRAKTICA 67ML UV FILTER
Total at Currys = £909.96 then £140 cashback from Canon and QuidCo tracked at £31.65 which equals £738.31 which I feel is damn good price for camera, decent lens, quality bag and a filter to protect the lens.
#17
plus £4.95 for delivery isn't it?
#18
I was in New York last week.

Bought this camera for $660 (£330, this price basically) with a 18-50mm lens and 2 gigs of flash

Does this price include a lens?

It sure does, although it is debatable! :whistling:

Some don't like the kit lens that is included, but the difference in price with/without lens is only about £27, so many think it is worth it.

Personally, I don't think the kit lens is actually that bad. When I got my 350d I replaced the kit with the much respected £220 Sigma 17-70 and there isn't an amazing difference the only major advantage being large aperture, reach and macro.

Personally I would wait some time for the 450 to come out before jumping onto this deal.
#21
The 450D is going to be about £500-£600, although the new 18-55 IS that is kit with the 450D is supposed to be a great improvement too.

yeh i agree the 18-55mm lens is *hit.....but just worth the £30 extra i paid for the kit last year at £349.....i bought the tamron 70-300mm 2nd hand from my bro in mint cond for £40 which is a much better starter lens...will later invest in a couple of decent ones......would also recommend the speedlight flashes as the flash in the camera isnt too clever....but the ****** lens and flash are way better than point and shoots tho (tho this is no guarntee that the shot will be better :whistling:)

agreed thats about what i paid......youll use it for a few weeks/month and then buy a decent lends and never use if again but for £27 its hardly a lot in compairson to the price of a decent lens which can be £00's or even gulp, £000's!!

£529 here ->7dayshop (once they get some stock in)

The kit lens isn't too bad - it can be a bit soft at the wider end, but it will take pretty decent pictures (and alot better than 99% of compacts). The newer 18-55mm IS lens that will come with the 450d corrects alot of the issues that are aparent with the current lens, but as already stated the 450d will be £500-600 when it comes out (and doesnt have a cashback offer on it).

If you all want a better lens (because you think that the kit lens is holding your pictures back) you can do alot worse than getting the 'nifty fifty', the 50mm f/1.8 prime lens. It will set you back about £50-60 but is almost the esential 2nd lens.
#30
The standard Canon 18-55 IS lens which is going to be shipped with the 450D can be had for £117 from 7dayshop.
#31
One of the significant new features on the 450D is the Live View, something to bear in mind for those moving from compact digital cameras. The 350D and 400D don't allow you to use the screen to frame pictures, you have to use the viewfinder, with the 450D you will be able to use the screen to frame pictures as you do with most compact digital cameras.
#32
If you can, I'd edit the OP to include the fact this comes with the lens.
#33
@LC.

Dunno how much of a benefit the live view really is for folk entering the serious side of photography - I think it's an infrequently used feature of a camera at this level.
#34
Personally I would get the Nikon D40 for £100 less than this deal - and I did, and I like it! I did vote this hot though as it's a good deal for anyone who particularly wants the Canon... ;-)
#35
I am totally new to the SLR field, looking to purchase my first SLR and i think its going to be the 450D mainly for the Live View as i don't think its very comfortable using a viewfinder with specs on.

I can't either, but it brought the order over £1000 which is another £30 discount so it was effectively free anyway

Can I suggest you have a 'play' with the Olympus E410 which has live view currently. Personally, I don't really like it (at least for 80% of my shots) - its excellent for tripod work and macro work where you are really composing shots, but for the 'on the fly' shots I find it a little distracting (and almost seems to lag a little, which might just be me imagining it). I'll reasses it when the 450d come out, but it wouldnt that feature alone wouldnt make me upgrade.
#38
Is it me or is the "go to deal" link linking to a dead amazon page?
#40
thanks, thought this was for Dixons though? :)
