10.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor
Canon’s CMOS sensor gives the camera a wide dynamic range, retaining subtle details in shadow and highlight areas. An improved pixel design and on-chip noise reduction ensure clean, crisp images throughout the ISO range. Images are converted at 14 bits for finer gradations and superior colour reproduction.

6.5 fps shooting
The EOS 40D captures up to 6.5 frames per second for a continuous burst of up to 75 large JPEG images (17 in RAW).

Wide-area AF with 9 cross type points
The high precision AF system employs 9 cross type points for precise focusing on both horizontal and vertical planes. The central AF point offers sensitivity up to f/2.8. Points are spread out across the AF frame to better accommodate off-centre subjects.

3.0" LCD with Live View mode
The bright 3.0" LCD provides pin-sharp definition for checking focus and composition, with 10x magnification for finer details. When shooting from awkward positions, Live View mode gives you the option of framing your image from the LCD.

DIGIC III processor
Fast and highly accurate, DIGIC III processes images at 14 bits for finer colour gradations. DIGIC III minimizes power consumption for prolonged battery life and delivers instant 0.15 second start up time.

EOS Integrated Cleaning System
Canon’s built-in dust prevention and cleaning system works to keep the sensor clean. A combination of technologies reduces, repels and removes dust and includes a Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit that shakes dust from the sensor with each power on.

Picture Style
Picture Style presets provide easy control over image processing parameters. Each style offers a different colour response. Picture Style presets are customizable in-camera or through the supplied Picture Style Editor software.

Magnesium alloy body
A durable magnesium alloy body with environmental seals protects the camera from the rigours of heavy use.

EF lenses and accessories
The EOS 40D is compatible with over 60 EF and EF-S lenses, and all EX Series Speedlite flash units. Wireless shooting and remote file transfers are possible with the optional Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E3.

Connectivity
Video Out allows reviewing on a TV screen. Connect with USB 2.0 Hi-speed for fast data transfers.

Could use thw PC World price match (they DO price match against Jessops), and get this for
£629.99 - 579.99 = 50, 50 x 110% = 55.. so 629.99 - 55 = £574.99 and THEN get the £60 cashback from Canon..

Saves an extra fiver if you live near a PC World and go and collect

Also 3% quidco available.

Good deal - what I do not understand is why this similar deal came up on the 'hot tab' when my (equally brilliant deal) did not feature, with a hotter temp. Is it just me being a matchstick or whatever?

my 450D deal (which tgot delivered yesterday and is top notch) :

Hi oldrichie :) Its got nothing to do with you being a matchstick - your post would have made front page as it is hot (hot view) - but as it was 2 days ago, its probably quite a few pages back now.

Also, for those of you who don't need the FPS, but would rather have weather sealing and high resolution:

Nice deal.

I do remember it being £599 a few months back but Canon were doing £100 cashback then.

I know the 50D has been announced and Canon have said that it's not a replacement but a sister model. I suspect this is to keep sales bouyant for the 40D.

Do you really want to compare that camera (samsung) with the 40D???:?

Why not? I already mentioned the defficiency in K20D/Gx20, which is the FPS. Apart from that, what advantages do the 40D have over GX20?

Please read the GX20/K20D and 40D review on sites like DPReview.com and see for yourself.

Canon L Series Lenses

Warehouse Express are offering a price match + 25% of the difference for stuff in stock at any online or high street shop, so could get them to price match this Jessops price
http://www.warehouseexpress.com/Home/default.aspx?/aboutus/pricepromise.html
They have the 40D body only for £589 - so would reduce it to about £576

Canon L Series Lenses

I have a 40D and enough L lenses that I couldn't tell you how many unless I actually got them all out and counted them.

However I also have a Samsung GX-20 and a Pentax K20D (identical camera), with 3 of the FA Limited primes (and 2 DA Limiteds). They are all outstanding. I don't think you should believe everything you read but this isn't too far off (The Best (Autofocus) Lenses Money Can Buy).

I'm not knocking L lenses, as I said I own many and many of them are also excellent (35/1.4, 135/2 and 70-200/4 IS are definitely in that category). But really the glass is the strongest part of the Samsung/Pentax system, and their primes are every bit as good as their L equivalents. There's a common misconception, mostly among people who don't actually know that much about photography (I'm not saying you don't), that Canon/Nikon is the be all and end all of photography, but it's simply not true. The trick is to identify the good stuff and use it no matter who makes it.

And to duffydj - it does make sense to compare the 40D/GX-20 since they're comparably priced. Depending on what you shoot either one could be the better choice.

Anyway, back to the point - the 40D is a very competent camera and this seems like a decent deal.

this has the SAME image quality as 450d ,

only difference is its a little faster on continous drive and is built more ruggedly.

seeing as this site is about saving £££ , why pay MORE for the 40 - for features no one here will ever use ?

I may be wrong, but I cant see many pro photographers on here looking out for deals (!)

or just go all the way and get an Oly 510 with zuiko kit lenses that will blow either of these canon cameras out of the water everytime.

Obviously you've never come across the 40D before. Just a look through the viewfinder will tell you that its a different beast. And that's just a starting point...

Why pay more for the 40d?
Is this question a joke?
Put the 40d and 450d side by side and that's only the starting point

I'm sorry but I can't agree.
For me there are only two brands if you want decent photos and then add decent lenses as sigma, canon, tamron, nikon.

These two brands are Canon and Nikon.
The others are just toys.

OK, but honest question, are you speaking from experience or is that just what you've heard?

I like Canon gear - over the years I've had (at least) D30, 10D, 300D, 350D, 1D, 1Ds, 5D, 20D, 40D. I still have a couple of them. All of them were good cameras.
I like Nikon gear too - I have a Nikon lens which I use with an adapter on my EOS gear and I've evaluated most of the Nikon bodies to see whether they fit my needs. I also have several Leica lenses and a Zeiss. And I said before, too many Ls to count. I've owned Tamron lenses and have a Sigma lens (12-24 there is nothing else on the market like it).

My point is I don't know about you but I have used some of the best photo gear in the world, and I still rate the Pentax K20D/Samsung GX-20 very highly. To say that if you want decent photos you need Canon/Nikon is just so far wrong. And as I said before, the Pentax Limited primes are absolutely outstanding (although some of the L primes are too).

Seriously, the others are not 'just toys'. If one can't take a good photo with a K20D and, say, a 77/1.8 Limited then the problem is most definitely not the gear.

What I will grant you is that if you take certain types of photos then Canon/Nikon is a clear choice. This mainly applies to sports though. Also, if you need full frame then again you're limited to Canon/Nikon, or shooting film.
