Manufacturer's Description
Advanced amateur photographers have long desired a digital SLR that matches the power and speed of professional models. With the EOS 40D, Canon delivers.

Product Description
Canon presents the EOS 40D, a high-tech reflex camera designed for both experienced and amateur photographers. The EOS 40D contains all the attributes of its predecessor, the EOS 30D, but has improved performances, including features such as the 10.1 effective megapixel CMOS sensor and larger 3? screen with direct aim function. Inside its sturdy, all-weather magnesium alloy casing, the EOS 40D packs a wide range of technologies to ensure excellent results in all situations. The EOS 40D offers 9 cross-type AF points and a Canon DIGIC III processor to adapt to all your shots, so your photos turn out bright and clear and in perfect detail. Meanwhile, the EOS 40D will reduce backlighting, reflections and shadows. This reflex camera is low on noise and offers a burst mode at a rate of 6.5 images per second. Thanks to the wide range of shooting modes, including night portrait, depth, speed or open priority, the creative possibilities are endless! The EOS 40D even offers Pictbridge connectivity and WiFi technology for wireless file transfer and direct printing (WiFi adapter optional). This Canon camera comes with an EF-S 17-85 f/4-5.6 IS USM lens, which is suitable for all photos, and an optical zoom of 5x, so you can get the most out of your digital camera. Compatible with Canon EF and EF-S lenses, and with Speedlite EX flashes, the EOS 40D lets you take digital photos of a professional calibre!

The 50D is now available:

On the surface it looks almost similar to its predecessor. However, there are quite a few significant improvements; fifteen megapixel CMOS sensor, faster DIGIC 4 processor, 3.0" VGA LCD monitor with Live View mode offering 3 AF modes, ISO sensitivity expandable to 12800 and an HDMI connection for high Quality Image viewing. It also includes a new Quick Control screen which shows the most commonly used settings and Creative Auto mode for automatic focus and exposure.

The 40D is therefore going to go down in price over the next few months.

thanks websearcher --was going to buy will wait now

This package cost me just under a grand in the summer. The 50D is around £1200 so I would go for the 40d right now. (unless you are hell bent on mega pixels).

Perhaps one year I'll explain to the staff at Dixons "Duty Free" @ Manchester Airport why I have a browse around before boarding my flight and always walk out of their store hissing my sides and shaking my head in bewilderment................

Well it pays to shop around. They are certainly not the cheapest, but in this case for the camera, they were the cheapest. i bought my 40d and lens from them few months ago and it was and still is the cheapest price one could get on the market for this camera+lens set!

great post and links within.

I've started looking at getting a DSLR and was looking at the 450D, although I must confess was leaning more towards the equivilant Nikon model.

Had a look at Jessops and John Lewis on Sunday and think I'll go for the 40D now.

The 40D just feels more solid and shoots better.

Absolutely ronnie and if you want to take fast sequential shots for fast action then the 40D is for you! I love mine.. expensive hobby though...
