Looks good if it works. Where do you enter the code?
#2
I assume at checkout, I received one of these yesterday after I paid £359.99 & mine works fine.
#3
Just tried it and works fine as you say. Excellent spot & great first post.

You should aways read the first post fully.....gives the link there:

"Step 2: Click ‘Buy It Now’ and go to the ‘Review your purchase’ page.

Step 3: On the ‘Review your purchase’ page, enter the voucher code at checkout in the ‘Redeem a voucher’ box. "

Is it worth getting an oldr model for less?

The 500D has more features and when you are paying upwards of £350, what's another £100-£150.

AND What is likely to be on offer AFTER Xmas?

Just my own personal quandry.

Depends on whether you have another £100-£150 spare. Thats 40-50% extra!

I have just used the code and bought one. Many thanks for the code, £36 not to be sniffed at!

This is a great deal, 10% off an already cracking price! Well spotted Inesse. I'm thinking of going for the two lens deal... anybody have any thoughts on this? I also have a 50D at home (not mine), but would the lenses be compatible?
#15
Thanks for the post. Now just too good to resist. Ordered. ;)

Oooooh, this is really, really hot! Better than anything else at this price, IMO.....

Hey, I wouldn't say the 500D is much better than a 450D, but the 550D is a good step up. If you wait 'til next spring they'll prob release a 600D and that's when current models will become cheaper IMO...:)
#18
A 2nd hand 500D is a good bet. I know its not as good as the 550D, but if you are mindful of your budget then 500D offers a lot of improvements over the 450D and it shoots videos too. I shoot weddings and have only ever purchased 2 items that were new. The rest of my kit is all 2nd/3rd hand as the saving for me was well worth it. This is a good deal for anyone in the market for a new DSLR. Voted Hot.

I see a lot of people using DSLR's purely for the Kudos. Most people will only use one in the same way as a compact i.e. Happy Snapping, but in the mistaken belief that a DSLR will give them better 'Snaps'.
Obviously not true of all, but certainly many.

For the majority a £150 compact would do the job far better.

This is a good find and a great price.

I hope everyone buying is also mindful of the cost of extra lenses that are required to do this beauty justice.

And 2nd haand is definitely the way to go. a very good market out there for the serious photographer.

I think you've just answered your own question.

If you want to take high quality photographs, then this camera can do the job. You still need to take the pictures though, so don't blame the camera or "lack of features" if you're no good.

Maybe the 500D has more features but will any of them produce good pictures without human intervention?

If features are so important, why not wait until Canon release an even more feature laden 600D. Or better still, wait for the 650D, that's bound to have even more features.

Is it a camera you're after or male jewelry?

this has well more than enough features for an advanced amature. the kit lens is not great but you can easliy buy a 28mm or 50mm for under a £100 that will produce sharper pixs. A good lens does make a significant difference but if you are a new starter this and the kit lenswill do you proud.

Perhaps 'Features' was the wrong word to use.

Lower noise levels at higher ISO settings are likely in future as are quieter AF motors. higher res display. Etc.

These are worth waiting for, surely.

I am still using a FZ3 as that was the top of the table when it came out. And I can STILL take very aceptable photos with it, but I now feel the need for MUCH better.

As long as they are Canon fit then you're fine. Nikon have issues because their cheaper bodies don't have built in focus motors so some lenses won't autofocus on low end cameras. No such problem for Canon.

Good post.

I recently bought an old 350D off ebay. It cost me £157 and ill stick my old 50mm 1.8 II on it for when I want to take PnS type shots. I still find it to be an awesome camera and this is coming from someone who uses 2 5DMKII's for a living with a range of L glass. I'm not blowing my own trumpet, just saying that newer camera's dont necessarily mean better pics.

If all you have is £500 then it makes more sense to me to go for the slightly older camera and buy a second lens rather than blow it all on a newer body.

That might be the better way for me to go as I have the EF 28-90 lens that came with my Eos 3000 and I also have a 50mm Minolta AF lens. plus a LOAD of manual lenses inc a 400mm tele.

Just need to add some adapters.

Main difference is the newer sensor and video capability - I have the 450D and my daughter has the 500D, it _is_ better, but then again, so is the 550D, 7D etc etc.....

this camera, at this price, is very good, I love mine.

Not quite true (the reason that is) All Canon APS-C size sensor cameras can use both EF and EF-S lenses, this 450D and the 50D are APS-C. Full frame Canons cannot use the EF-S lenses (5D for example)
#32
Looks a great deal. I take it this lens isn't much use though for close up photos and as a beginner I'd be better off with a superzoom compact? Or perhaps a used Canon with suitable lens included?

Thanks. Hot.

Aha. Do you mean they CANT use them or just cant use them with the AF function Etc.

CANT use APS-C lenses on full frame bodies (e.g. the 18-55 lens which comes on the 450D will not fit the 5D or Canon film cameras).

Does anyone know if the lens is IS (image stabilisation)?

AF will work, but you will see a black ring through the viewfinder akin to heavy vignetting. Also some EF-S lens protrude further at the back and have been known to smash the mirror of a full frame camera like the 5D. There is no workaround or way out of this. This is what I hate about DSLR manufacturers, they continously polarise their consumers in one way or another.

Ok then is a Canon EF 28-90MM f/4.0-5.6 non USM II Lens any good or is this one of the unsuitable ones?
If not on a Canon what about Sony, Nikon or Pentax.

I dont think this comes with an IS lens! Or does it?

the standard kit lens with this camera is an 18-55 canon with image stabiliser. and looking at the piccy they have it looks like its this lens as it has teh same writing above the lens. Zoom...Enhance...Rotate 180 degrees. it can be made out to say Image stabilisation.

Im not great photographer but i got this of my kids the full size image has greater detail.
