Great price for a stunning camera, don't worry about finding the extra cash for the 550D,this is all the camera an enthusiast needs,i do speak from experience as i have owned it for over a year and my friend has the 550D.

Quality camera - love it

has been this price for a while, £30 cash back deal has finished now as well.

Lovely camera for photography. Not so great for video as only does 720p @30 fps and 1080p @ a useless 20 fps. I've got one and now saving up to get a 5D mkIII if/when it comes out.
Still a great price. Voted hot.

Sell them both and buy lenses for the new one instead? Unless you have 2 heads and 4 eyes :P

I got a refurb 550D for around £450 on ebay, I'd recommend that.

I got this a few weeks back for slightly cheaper, and I LOOOOOOOVE it. I was going to wait for it to go below £450 but I couldn't hang on.

I made this with it:

Wonderful camera for taking pictures. If you want it for video I strongly recommend you skip it and get a 550D instead. Keep in mind this camera lacks an external microphone jack which is a "must have" feature for virtually any video shooting (unless you're comparing it to your mobile's video).

I own it. I'd recommend it. It is also a very competitive price (Jessops can be cheaper but they also sell it with worse lenses).

I do not think the video recording feature on these DSLR's is refined enough yet, they are still testing the water with all the features.

I recently bought my hubby the Canon EOS10D which is an excellent camera although a bit too technical for me. The 500D is a bit more up my street - great price too. :D

I'm not bothered if you don't like it. But 'kinda gay'. Are you a 12 year old?

I was being lighthearted but you clearly find it appropriate to insult me in return, calm down a bit FFS you'll give yourself a heartattack!! If you want a clinical review, your "video" went on too long, was badly shot (use a tripod next time!) and was boring. Is that better???

Who talks like that? Are you a little kid? Sorry but calling things "gay" is unacceptable, and frankly the way you type makes me wonder if you're old enough to be on the open internet at all.

*sigh* I am calm. I was merely pointing out that using the word 'gay' in that term is something a child would do.

Fair enough with the review. All opinions valid! I did use a tripod though :)

I find it laughable and a bit sad that you have to resort to silly name calling to get your point over., perhaps its not me who is the child? I'd really like to see if you were so brave if we were talking face to face though instead of you typing insults over an anon forum, its very cowardly!! Anyway, gay IS still an acceptable adjective despite the efforts of you and your politically correct friends who seem to want to make every word an "ism".

Please wind your neck in until you are old enough to converse like an adult, noone asked for your input and your attempts to troll the forum are against the rules, grow up!

Thats your opinion and you're entitled to. It was meant as a nice comment but clearly some people (you included) would rather look on the negative side of life... shame really. As for the tripod, continuity was bad, are you sure it had three legs :D (its a JOKE seems that I need to make that fact CLEAR!!)

This is the most ridiculous conversation I've ever had.
Please nobody reply to this guy.

I dont want to prejudge you, but given your massive, and I mean, MASSIVE, sense of humour bypass, I sincerely doubt this is the most ridiculous conversation you've ever had!! I suggest you take a deep breath and then look back at the comments, you may just find that there was no issue until you made one.... oh I forgot, you're not talking to me anymore.... im CRUSHED!!!!

It is a bit of a pity that you have to buy the lens with camera. I know the 18-55 lens is pretty good but you are very likely to want a better lens once you purchase the camera. Another plus is that Canon cameras and lenses maintain great second hand values. Voted hot from me

From what I have heard it is pretty poor.

I recently bought this off Amazon for £475 and so far so pleased. Still having a play around. My first SLR after being just used to point and shoot small digital cameras and this seems to tick all the boxes for a 1st purchase.

Reading this thread, just reminded me, I haven`t sent my cashback form away.

Also, I could be wrong but isn`t this camera deal available on best buy site with 20% Quidco or Topcashback and works out around the £412 mark. I sure I looked at this when I posted it on another thread few days ago.

No mate, honestly, you must be thinking of the non-IS version (which I got with my 400D and is indeed pretty crap). This IS version is a completely different ball game, by all reviews it performs very well and would serve the novice user for quite some time.

Got this for £464 before xmas. This has been this price for ages and as cashback deal ended last week this is cold for me as its more expensive than it has been

The 18-55 is fairly mediocre, however as Frakison stated the "IS" version is quite good and will last a new buyer quite a while before you want more. Not sure where the sweet point is but probably f8 as usual and the IS is ideal for first time owners of DSLR's. Nothing wrong with any of the recent Canons 400d, 450d, 500d all very good and will be more than most newbies need to get started.

I am not looking for a 500D am looking for the 550D (at the right price) and there is a lot of difference between the cameras too many to list.

It is quite a good lens, nice and quick to focus, and the IS is also good.

To be honest, to get quality over and above this lens you need to spend close to £1000 because some of canons lower price range lenses have some serious flaws. - Put it this way the kit lens will do fine for 99% of the customers that buy this camera!

Digital Rev on the 'bay do it for £422 delivered (body only)

The 18-55mm IS lens is good for a beginner but I sold mine pretty quickly and spent more on the new lens than I did on the body!

Unfortunately too many people realise this has to be the case AFTER they have bought into DSLR, it can be a very addictive and expensive hobby! (you soon find you need a flash, then more lenses, then battery packs......)

No probs, only worthwhile paying the extra for the 550D if shooting video is a prority.
