I am looking for my first DSLR camera to progress from my compact camera...would this be a good one to have ?

Depends how involved you want to get. If you're a fairly casual user, a 1000D would do you well for a fair bit less cash. Or the Sony A230 (and that family in general) is well reviewed for beginners.

This should definately be a good camera if you r moving from a Compact camera. It has live view, FULL HD movie recording which some other biginner DSLR dont have.

If only the 550D was this cheap.

I own this camera. Its brilliant!
#12
gutted - bought this at the start of september for a great deal more

Hi, does anyone who's owned both consider it worthwhile to upgrade to this from the 400D?
Ta.

I've got a 500D, picked it up for £499 in duty free last xmas, and got £50 cashback from Canon, so it cost me £450 :)

Its an absolutely brilliant camera. I've only used the kit lens it comes with so far, and so far I have found it to be superb. I'm told its a big improvement over the older 18-55mm non-IS kit lens.

For me, this was my first DSLR camera, after having used a compact. I found it to be quite intuitive and an absolute joy to use. I wholeheartedly recommend this camera to anyone.

Given that this deal is a "land-side" deal compared to my duty free bargain, I have to say this is a fantastic price. The camera is worth every penny plus a lot more.

Heat and Rep added :)

550D > this cam.

Well, that's what generally happens with the improved models isn't it?

Bought this camera in June for £540 - £30 cashback from Canon so this deal is a pretty fantastic.

Build quality on this camera is better than the 550D IMO. Obviously the 550D has a few more bells and whistles.

This camera will exceed many peoples capability even with the kit lens.

So much is spoken about which brand is better, which model is better, and how the kit lens has poor sharpness etc etc. What matters most is the person behind the camera, how they interpret light and use compositional techniques to produce images that have that wow factor.

To get a feel for what a kit lens can do with a Canon Rebel XT ie a camera well below a 550d have a look at this site.

http://www.pbase.com/zylen

This was taken with a Non IS kit lens in 2005 on a "mediocre" Canon body (I think an XT was a 350d over here in the UK which is an 8MP camera!)

Daniella has an eye for photography and is well known on the photographic community for her outstanding images using mediocre bodies. Quite a few of her images are taken with the old 18-55 non IS lens which according to many is worthless. She also has some nice glass which allows her to take close-up wildlife, but my point is any DSLR these days can produce superb images you just need practice and have some artistic bent!

I only wish I was as good as Daniella!

the price is good but the camera it self it very very good as i have bought mine last year was around £600 so this price really is good head it up:p
#22
By the way, I've voted this hot because it's a mega value DSLR and if it gets people into photography that's cool by me!
#23
I would love one of these with a lens capable of taking photos like this..........

Can anyone actually apply the 6% off code. Only available now to reserve and collect at store, and I cannot see any option to put the code in (and I am trying to buy one) - otherwise this is back to 519 and not a deal - as 503 from amazon.
#25
Is anyone aware of a 'cashback from Canon' being available now or soon ?

The 550D has great reviews as well but costs about £200 more as far as I can tell :-(
#26
I have this Camera...takes excellent pics!

I wish Canon would stop putting HD movie modes on these SLRs!

If you buy and SLR you're buying it to take great pics and not to film things!

It completely blows this cam away though. It's simply a massive improvement over its predocessor ESPECIALLY if you're wanting to shoot video as its quality is totally unparalleled on any other SLR (apart from the 5D).

Great camera. If your looking for HD video shoot features then the 550D offers better options. It does 720p and 1080p in 25p, 25p and 30p plus 60p in 720p mode for nice slow motions stuff.
500D only does 720p @ 30p and 1080p @ a useless 20p.
For photographers this camera is a beauty. Amazing stuff.

Unfortunately I think its OOS currently but hopefully theyll get more in before the voucher expires. Order and collect doesnt allow you to use the voucher as you pay on collection.

If anyone is looking for a good deal on the forthcoming 60d take a look at this deal I found today, cracking price here.
