I stumbled upon this deal when walking around the new BestBuy in Aintree. It seemed such a good deal that I considered upgrading my 450d to this but couldn’t justify it to the other half. Next best I could find was £925 (Calumet Photographic – source ‘www.camerapricebuster.co.uk’). I know it’s not online but I was told it’s not store specific so hopefully someone will pick up a bargain.

Absolute bargain. Is BestBuy a membership retailer like Costco? From recollection, Costco quote prices ex-VAT, I wondered if this was £720 + VAT. It would still be a good price!

At first glance i was like omg! Then irealised its not the 15-85mm its a 17. Oh damn. Great camera, my brother has one. Though I still opted for the 550d due to the video functionality.

Noting that this is (probably?) a more expensive lens than in the 550D package for £632 from Amazon (or now £615 from Currys using 35pound code http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/prod1212.html), is the 550D a better deal/camera for a first DSLR?

bah, probably a good thing I'm in NI with no best buy stores :| Hot

What you could do is head over to PC World and get them to price match plus 10% diff which works out to be just over £700. Better bargain

Depends what you want in your camera, i had the same dilemma a few weeks back, i opted for the 50d due to it faster frame rate as i do a lot of sports photography, if you like the idea of a dslr with video i urge you to try it first because in my opinion its a bit of a gimik and clunky to use compared to a dedicated video camera, as for the lens 17-85 its a cracker, better than the 18-55 and optically as good as the 15-85, the lens alone stills sells for £300, i paid £900 for a kit 4 weeks ago (camera-lens-4gb ultra CF card) so at £720 its an absolut steal.

Great price for a nice little kit, a much better option than the 60D seeing as Canon have downgraded the xxD line :(

Steady on there chap. I own the 17-85 and the 18-55mm is sharper from 18-35mm and the 15-85 is far superior to both.

It is a perfectly serviceable lens though with a useful focal range and fast USM focussing (the IS isn't nearly as good as the 18-55 IS, which in turn isn't as good as the IS on the 15-85m).

im after a 50D and this would work out cheaper with the lens than buying 2nd hand. cant get to the shop and sure as hell they wont post to me :( typical

I also own the 450d, and sometimes wish I had an upgraded version, however, if I did make the upgrade, it would be to a full frame sensor and not the 50d... I realise there is a massive price difference here, but you'd be better saving the money and getting some nice glass! My 450d has produced some really nice images with better lenses :)

Horses for courses, on my 50D i get consistency good images along the 17-85 range, the 18-55 can be patchy at the extremes, not really noticeable on my old 1000d but the 50d shows it up, to be honest i still prefer my canon 55-250 as i do a lot of sports photography.
I would love the 15-85 but mrs sharpcroft might not agree as i already have 18-55, 17-85, 55-250, 70-300!!!

I should also point out im talking about the KIT 18-55 lens as supplied with the 1000d

A bit harsh considering it's not hard to find a number of online dictioaries who give 'lense' as an alternative

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/lense

Sorry but I was only in Aintree for the weekend so therefore unable to. A female member of staff informed me at the time that the price had been dropped due to the new (but not so great) 60d being released
