Why not just buy it from laskys for the same price incl del ? It's right under this one in the camerapricebuster list

If one does not need the video recording feature than the 50D would be better, for the same price, but check out ebay for some deals.

The 550D is a superb camera. I am saving up for it at the moment.

Every good review of this (there are poor reviews because the review is poor not the camera) puts this head and shoulders above most. Infact B&W mag put it among the DSLRs you can count on one hand that will output this image quality.

I've been aftter on for a while (body only) and there was a big shortage (good camera for the price) for instance Jessops nationwide had a stock of minus 47!

Ps bought one today. Because I know how warehouse staff function, how couriers handle goods and wanted to support small local rather than large remote I bought a kit from Wildings in Wigan with 3 yr gtee in the deal.
#6
Can't edit previous but just to say stocks of kits are coming through better now than over the last weeks (to months in some cases)..so if you are waiting your wait is nearly over. :)
#7
Loads of new cameras by various manufacturers are going to be released next month. Best to hold out if you can.

Also worth noting that you can get the 550d battery grip and side trigger with battery pack for £35 delivered on a certain aution site :)

Makes a big difference to the ergonomics and works identically to the OEM canon one.

This is what I'm also liking. There's gunna be lots of third party interest in this camera = cheaper than Canon's own prices.

Note the stock levels are now fluctuating between being in stock and available 2nd September.

I've no idea if Laskys have any stock, they don't seem to show stock levels
#11
Meathotukdeals - how much was the camera at Wildings with the warranty? I ask coz it's my hometown and looking for the 500d or 550d for early September!
#12
Unless you need the ability to shoot movies the 50D easily outperforms this in all areas, and will only set you back about £25 more than this

Still a good price if you want the video ability, but if you're looking for a camera the 50D offers much more bang for your buck

Sad that they are downgrading the XXD line, after 6 months of waiting I've just ordered a 7D

The good news is I won a £100 bet with a mate who claimed the 60D was never going to happen :p

And just check out the translucent screened Sony from the same web page with the new sensor. I was going to get a new DSLR, but I am holding right back now......

Hmm, wonder if BestBuy have this Canon 550D with 20% off. Now that would be a deal.

Easily? I take great note of dp review. And I look at the samples too. They say the 50D lacked detail in image quality, and gave it a Highly Recommended (Just).

Below ISO 1600 image output is clean with well balanced contrast and colors and as you would expect from a DSLR with a 15 megapixel sensor the 50D delivers a fair amount of detail. Having said that, in terms of per-pixel sharpness the 50D cannot quite keep up with the better 10 or 12 megapixel APS-C DSLRs in the market.

My thoughts exactly! That's why I was asking whether anyone knew if they sell Canon DSLR's over on the Best Buy thread.

With the imminent release of the Canon 60D in October I'm hoping for a further drop in price soon.

Easily : Better viewfinder, much better autofocus, rear command dial, top LCD screen, magnesium body, dedicated AF on button, DOF preview button, micro-focus adjustment, takes high speed CF cards, much faster frame rate, faster shutter speed, faster flash sync, much larger buffer, weather sealed body + more

If you you're looking to produce some nice prints of pixels grab the 550D if you're looking for photos go for the 50D

There is a reason the 50D has a MSRP of nearly 50% more than the 550D

Not in stock last night but they had 3 (yes 3!) on display - what a waste!

Ah well you see I'm more interested in image quality than then types of things you list.

However 550D also has DOFP, the highest resing screen of the EOS (taken from various mag write ups when the camera came out), controls much like my only other didgi SLR - the 350D. Card speed, buffer, FR, auto focus etc don't interest me. And as for the price...yes the 550D is a real bargain too when comapred to thers , even quite similar 7D (sensor wise).

We ain't gunna change our minds (_;)

I just popped along to the Merry Hill branch. I thought my luck was in when I saw them at £699 and they appeared to have boxes under the counter, but the guy reckoned that they were just for the display models.

This seems to be the best price around for this particular model, so I don't really know why this isn't hotter..?

ive owned the 550d for a few months now and its a very very good camera.id recommend it to anyone,id also recommend the camera grip also but like posted earlier not a canon branded.i got the compatible camera grip from a company in wales for £49.99 and its very well made and came with 2 lith/ion batteries in the price.
#30
i should also recommend the tamron 18-270mm lens ive been using,as all the reviews said its a fantastic walkabout lens for reasonable money.i plan on some canon L series lenses when i have some spare cash but im really pleased with this lens for now.

Bought this cam a few months ago and have had no regrets! (it replaced my Nikon D5000)

EDIT: I'd recommend you buy the 50mm F1.8 canon lens for this ASAP as it works in perfect harmony with the camera!

Just bought the Canon 18-200 too (most expensive lens I've ever dropped cash on) but have yet to properly test it thanks to our crappy British weather system :P

ps. Thanks to my cat for letting me confuse the crap out of him for an hour or so :D

Absolutely. It is a bit pricey at Canon, but it has outstanding optical performance. Finally you can give those 18 MP a real workout!

I fail to see the appeal of "walkabout" lenses (and bundles, while we are at it). You bought a DSLR, and then you take away the main advantage? The Canon lens may be still ok, but most of these have some areas (usually the long end, and open aperture) where they give really poor performance.
#38
Is this better than the nikon d90. I've been looking at cameras but know very little about the spec comparisons between nikon and canon.

I have the perception nikon at better?

The daughter is about to start a media course at college which involves photography. Would this be a suitable camera - for college course and for a beginner?
