I have the G9 & its a fantastic camera. This is a great price for the G11

there is no question about the quality of canon's G range, G5, G7, G9 and now G11, all great cameras but my question is that why would someone buy this size camera, you either go for compact camera like tz10 or ixus etc. or you go for dslr type , this is not a small camera and on top of it, no interchangeable lenses either.

you can call it a high end point and shoot camera and least of the beautiful cameras in canon.

I think it is overpriced for what it is. It's a top notch compact but it should retail closer to £225-£250 max new. Price drop I guess because the G12 has een around a short while now. They should be selling these off fifty quid cheaper than this.

Hotshoe, syncs at higher shutter speeds than any canon slr when using off-camera flash, less shutter lag than most compacts, RAW capability, usable optical viewfinder.

Have a look at other prices for it on the net... its a good price comparatively... very much the same for the S90... not a whole lot cheaper than the S95... these dont seem to change much in price over time.

Someone must like em... dont think Canon would be continually producing newer models otherwise... I'm with you on the Compact issue though... and I feel the same about these new Sony Nex-3 types as well... but... there must be a market :S Im after the S95 myself... but £300 is a lot of money..

I have a G5, I'd love one of these if I was going to replace it, best feature in my opinion is the swing out viewfinder, ideal when you are at the back of a crowd.
Voted hot.

AMAZING camera....I LOVE mine, would highly recommend it. The G series is the 'compact' of choice for many professional photographers when they are not carrying around their DSLR's.

Could get 10% off if you haggled with manager but am sure that no longer applies...would consider it for £250

Hard decision between this and the G12. £50 difference.

Shame these have a 5x optical zoom. Hard to take them seriously relative to other P&Ss that are often shipping with between a 10x to 15x zoom AND wide-angle. I know the picture is sharper and you can always crop but after living with a 4x zoom camera for several years I wouldn't pick it again.

edit: Just flicked through a review. Only difference between the G11 and G12 is ergonomics and the video mode is slightly better. Nothing special. Same sensor. I'd save the £50 and get this if you can...

I wish I had the spare money for one of these. I love Canon cameras.

I've already got a dslrbut bought a Canon G10 for when taking a big camera isn't practical. It gives you a lot of the same option as with a dslr. Anyway, even for those without a dslr I would recommend. Photo quality is superb and you can really experiment with the settings where you wouldn't be able to with a normal compact. If you're not interested in apertures and shutter speeds though, you may as well just get a normal compact like the lumix tz_

When have you honsetly ever used a 10 to 15x zoom on a P&S, just like the pixel war going on, completely pointless. In fact Canon reduced their pixel count from 14.7 on the G10 to 10 on the G11 as the sensor is too small to really benefit it.
5x zoom is more than adequate and if you really need it, get a 2 x adapter off ebay.

Agree about the pixel war, but next time I purchase a P&S a decent zoom will be high on priorities list. It's not always possible to simply stand closer unfortunately, when your subject isn't your mate posing infront of some monument :(

Great lens equivalent to a 28-135mm lenses on a 35mm film camera

it's an excellent camera, the form brutally follows its function. the G12 and S95 are better if you want the 720p video but if that doesn't matter the G11 is a medium bargain at this price, if it falls further I may get seriously tempted!

the G11 is ideal for the person who wants the majority of the features of an SLR without the significant extra bulk and weight, but doesn't want the crappy tiny sensors of the average point-and-shoot camera... see dpreview for their opinion:

just in case you're considering the G12: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/CanonG12/

p.s. the dpreview review of G12 has a comparison table of the G11, G12 and S95

I just noticed that amazon have the G12 on special for "only" 354. I would definitely splash the extra for the 720p mode. The only other realistic alternatives for video quality are the panasonics which are qt pricey or you need to hack the cheaper GH2 to get the better video ( http://www.43rumors.com/the-gh1-hacker-interviewed-panasonic-gh2-prediction-olympus-hack-and-why-the-gh1-is-better-than-the-canon-5d/ )

at this price, id go with the sony nex5 for a little more

Won't really pay over 200 quid for this. Plain dont see the point.

Neither as portable as S95, which has similar IQ - nor as good image quality as M4/3 or budget SLR.

But if you are using it as a point and shoot make sure you understand what all the buttons do ... my sister got one a few months ago and when looking at it at Christmas I discovered (to her surprise) that at some point a few weeks earlier someone had switched it from saving 10Mpixel images to 640x480 images!

Also, when people say its the small camera that professionals choose then its small in comparison to a DSLR and a handful of lenses .... I've got an SX10 and sometimes I think I'd like a small camera to use when I don't want a big camera hanging round my neck and no way does a G11 fit this ... something like an ixus is much more likely. Though on the positive side G11 still has a viewfinder and I'm still not really taken by the "hold camera a couple of feet in front of you while you try to see what the LCD on the back shows" school of photography

this... plus it has so may knobs/buttons to quickly allow setting to be changed such as ISO which many keen photographers will be pleased with. It offers much more than just high quality images.

how is the g11 better than an slr...suggest you look here

http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon_EOS_500D-vs-Canon_PowerShot_G11

so even a budget slr slaughters the G11, even my old 400D slaughters it...not a little, massively (like comparing a ford focus 1.6 to an F1 car in a race).....G11 is a nice camera but i just think its pointless, just my opinion i guess, too bulky and lacks features/accesories /lens of a dslr

if it was £150 though id buy it, lol!
