I have been looking for one of these for a couple of weeks and was thinking about getting an NTSC version from ebay. This from dixons plus 50 quid cash back (til 31/08/2008) make it almost the same price as an import but with warranty and is PAL.
511.98 price inc. del.
461.98 with cashback ( http://www.canon.co.uk/flashcashback/ )

surely it can't be PAL if it's HD.. ?

Tis a good price.

pal = 50Hz
NTSC = 60Hz

you could have sync issue if trying to play the ntsc on a pal screen, however i should think most screens can switch, or you can convert it, or there maybe a setting in the firmware

aha.
from experience, most lcd tvs i've seen have been 60hz and convert the PAL broadcast signals to that internally - which is one reason they don't always look that great.

I fail to see the need for HD video like this, by the time you have an 8Gb SDHC card that lasts about 10 minutes of filming it would seem more sensible to downshift to a more realistic 576 res so you get some decent duration.

i doubt it's saving the footage uncompressed?
maybe using some variant of mpeg 4.

Just done some digging on google, its 1 hour per 8Gb at full resolution, and uses AVCHD?

Thats a lot of cards required or a 16Gb or 32Gb if you want to go anywhere without a laptop.

That said I am not the worlds greatest tecchy as I make do with avi file films etc so HD for me sort of passes me by.

8gb sdhc card gives the following length of recording:
lp mode-5mbps= 3hrs
sp mode-7mbps= 2hrs20min.
xp+mode-12mbps= 1hr25min
fxp mode-17mbps= 1hr

I have been looking at this camera for a while & its not a bad deal, 3% Quidco or Egg Cashback also.

The quality of recording is suppose to be superb & nearly DV tape quality, I don't think the duration is a real issue as the 16gb memory cards are coming down in price now & you have the benefit of not needing a big camera bag to carry them around in either.

I vote HOT because I want one !! :-D
