Almost £300 for a camera with 3.7 optical zoom ,2.5" LCD & no HD video shocking.

yeah, i looked, but currys don't stock the model anymore, and from what i've read the 990 is not as good.

Kind of like buying a Fiesta when Mondeo's are cheaper.

why? you pay for quality - this is one the most highly rated compacts you can get...
what do you need hd video in a camera this size for.....my dslr costs 000's but doesnt have any video but i use it for photos.....i bought a video camera to take video
how much do think decent compacts cost? cheap ones are rubbish.....had 2 hp's, a kodak, casio exlim all are garbage and photo quality is laughable
so whats a better camera?

People voting cold are moronic. Sure, it's an older model and newer models are cheaper but does that make them better? This still one of the best compacts on the market, shame it's been discontinued.

In short yes current compact cameras are better, considerably so in some areas as it has no wideangle coverage at all, the screen is low resolution and there's no HD movie mode. At this price it's not far below the current top of the range compact cameras such as the LX3 which is a far better specified camera and far more capable particularly in low light thanks to a much brighter wide angle lens and a larger sensor. Given it's possible to get better cameras for much less I think it would be daft to fork out 280 pounds on this one.

I still need to get a camera and for a good few years have bought canon ixus's, i was going to go for this one. Its like choosing a mobile phone etc, on the net the reviews are so hit and miss i never know who to trust/believe or if there is better camera out there (manufactuer etc), its literally a point and click for us.... any ideas on what to go for if this canon isnt reccomended.
