Fun, pocket-sized and totally intuitive.

Every aspect of the PowerShot A480 has been redesigned with one thing in mind: ease of use. Thanks to a new, simplified button layout - with dedicated buttons for zoom, mode and playback and an improved User Interface, it's as easy to operate as it is to carry. Compact proportions make the PowerShot A480 an ideal 'take-anywhere' camera, perfect for capturing spontaneous snapshots.

Compact, Intuitive and Fun
Small and light enough to slip into a pocket, the PowerShot A480 has a classic, stylish design that feels great in the hand. With Canon's market leading optical Image Stabilizer you can keep images sharp by reducing the effects of camera shake throughout the zoom range.

15 Shooting Modes
15 shooting modes - including dedicated Kids & Pets and Indoor modes - make it easy to get the right settings for any scene. Select the mode you want and let the camera take care of everything else. Supplement your photos with smooth, 30fps VGA video clips.

Great People Shots
A suite of Face Detection technologies detects up to nine faces in a scene and adjusts focus, exposure, flash settings and white balance - for optimal results with natural-looking skin tones.

Motion Detection Technology
Motion Detection Technology uses changes in scene information and scene brightness to accurately identify subject motion. The optimal ISO level is then automatically set, to minimise blur and maximise image quality.

how deos this perform in low light ? looking for a new one to replace a casio Exilim that doens't do too well in low light.
AA battery powered ? ... ugghh ..... no thanks.
#7
AA power so no battery or charger makes this a poor deal even if the camera is OK.

A fiver less for a proper Panasonic with Li-ion power (FS4) in Tesco at the moment. Can't beat that.

Each to there own, and not wanting to detract from the deal at hand, but I see AA batteries as a big positive. Battery manufacturuers have plouged millions of dollars into producing high capacity AA batteries for this very reason. This menas you get good battery life, its very cheap to have a "spare" battery, and if you forget you can always buy some AA's from the local newsagent, rather than forgetting to charge a propiatory battery and finding its flat after taking just a few snaps. Like I say people will see this differently but dont let that discourage other buyers, less manufacturing money on chargers, custom batteries and cables, should mean more to spend on the actual product .....

I could not agree more, battery type would not put me off buying a camera EVER! Price on the other hand, thats what puts me off.
Voted hot BTW:thumbsup:

Also agree - Lithium Ion have a limited time dont they before the need to replace (thats what I read somewhere) something like 3 years.

I have a liking for AA/rechargeable batteries, can carry a few as spare should the need arise,

Agreed..
Battery type should not be considered as a buying criteria (price should definitely be)
There are both pros and cons of external(flexibility, backups, reusability) vs internal batteries(no extra expenses, long usage) etc.. I am sure people will be able to come up with many more points in favour or against both options.
No chdk... but Voted hot for this price..

Yes, there are pros and cons to AA power vs dedicated Li-ion (though I think dedicated Li-ion wins by a mile). BUT the point is that even if you prefer AA power you should expect a much better deal as the manufacturer is not supplying the battery or charger - you have to BYO. On that basis this is not a particularly good deal, especially when you can pick up an excellent Panasonic (one of the best brands out there) with proper battery, etc. for less money.

Good deal, thanks OP. I was only looking at getting one of these earlier in the week from Comet for £90, so have now ordered from Play.com instead.

The fact it is powered by AAs is a good thing in my book too. I have a stack of decent rechargeables and a decent recharger!

re battery life, all reviews state this camera is one of the better ones for AA battery life :)
stick some decent duracells etc in it and you should get a decent lifespan
ps - the video mode also seems very good, watched the ones ive shot on my 42" lcd tv and they look surprisingly good, and with my 8GB card i get 1hour of video at the top quality setting :)
also camera has a widescreen setting so will take 16:9 format pictures, again great for full screen tv viewing :)

No reason to think you're wrong, oakwood49, but that still doesn't answer the value point (which is what this site is all about). No charger or battery supplied so initial price should be lower; a pair of "decent Duracells" will be the better part of £1 each time if you buy ahead, potentially much more if caught in a tourist trap. Some may consider there is an environmental point there too (doesn't bother me too much). Bulkier too. Dedicated Li-ions typically give over 300 shots in this type of camera and a spare to charge and take with you can be as low as a fiver if you buy clones off ebay traders (which have always given me good service).

The only real advantage of AAs is that you can pick them up most places if you run out of power. Possibly the sensible choice for a camera that only comes out once or twice a year for the holiday pics?

You pays your money and makes your choice, but these points are worth considering to ensure it's an informed one.

PS whichever route you go DON'T buy memory cards from the retailer - they must make more profit on these than the cameras! A couple of 2Gb SD cards is a good choice and you should be able to pick them up for under £3 each.

Here's the link to a Panasonic at Tesco which I think is an unbeatable deal at £69.97 while they last. Check out the reviews too (link from the Tesco site):
