I have this camera and paid 290 for it about 5 months before the G10 came out and its PHENOMENAL! A fantastic high-end point and shoot. Highly recommend for anyone that uses a DSLR and wants something more portable that takes fantastic pictures.

Not very good at high ISO's but hell, it's a point and shoot so it goes with the trade.

Fantastic price.

Fantastic price, less so when I'm looking to sell my D40 (£170! :(), it seems almost silly to get this, even though it's ace.
#4
I've just ordered this as a more compact cousin to my 40d - top camera and worth every penny
#5
Indeed top camera.

it is highly rated, but i think its a big pointless as its way too bulkly for a point and shoot, so id rather take my dslr .Was going to buy this for the wife, but bought the ixus 980is instead for about the same price (technically not as good but truly portable)

nb. keep checking as im sure it was £217 2 days ago when i looked

I'd disagree, I have one and end up taking it everywhere with me which I just never do with my SLR even before I had my G9, I think it depends on what you view as portable and find a hassle to carry.
Excellent camera at a very good price, and as no one has mentioned the movie modes on it are excellent for a stills camera and can be used for almost any filming that isn't going to be shown on a big screen.

can you fit it in a trouser pocker...no...so it isnt all that portable, but its prob the 2nd best compact camera, assuming the g10 is better
i use a camera to take photos and a camcorder to take movies.....have both in the same device equals compromise

actually I can fit it in my trouser pocket :P though thats not to say I do but I can carry the bag around and not notice any extra weight or inconvenience and if I have a bag it will fit in it very easily.
I Admit if possible having a camcorder to take movies is much better, however if thats not possible then this camera is a very good alternative, I have a friend who works making films often with community projects and he often uses his G7 over the PD150's due to ease of use and portability as the quality is still up to scratch.

posted last month (my first post) when it was £254.99 got lot of cold votes. So decided not to buy.
http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/278116/canon-powershot-g9-digital-camera-b/
£25 price drop in three weeks. Could be more cheaper next week (sale time).

My two penneth:
This device is truely portable when compared to the 2 or 3 lenses a lot of DSLR users will insist on carrying arround. The number 1 thing DSLR users want is the ability to control the aperture; you can't do that with an Ixus but can with this.
The pocket sized Ixus seem more and more pointless as camera phones get better.
Considering this is little more expensive than the top of the range Ixus, this is, phenomenal, and no idea why it got voted cold at £255 as the next best price is £275 and the G10 is £330

This is a great camera. I purchased this last year, it is not exactly point and shoot if you want to take great pictures. But then this camera is not aimed at novices. It is marketed as filling in the gap between point and shoot and the more professional DSLR. It was a showdown between the Nikon P5100 and the Canon G9 and I am glad that I opted for the Canon.

I would say that it is a bit bulky to fit in a trouser pocket if that is what you want for convenience then go for the Sony T Series camera.

A reveiw of the Canon G9 can be found here:-

Excellent Price. Voted Hot.

Which takes the best pictures just using the Auto setting between this the G9 and the Nikon D40?
#16
i love the style of it. bit pricey for me though
#17
how is this compared to the Canon Powershot SX110 ?
#18
Wish it was on Play.com so I could justify buying it with my PlayFunds credit!
#19
I've just got the Canon 450D, as im a novice would i be better off with this?

This camera is simply awesome. I've had mine for nearly 14 months and wanted a step up from my Canon A70 but did not want to buy a full blown DSLR. Did a lot of research and picked this one and funnily enough purchased it from Amazon.

If you like the look of this - the price is very attractive, buy it!!!!!!

Oh the irony! I was looking at this last night for something to blow my bonus on! For those who have any doubts I recommend that you look at the review that was posted (dpreviews) however, I also recommend that you look at the G10 review aswell, as it has comparrisons with the latest model (the G10)
For those who want a rough description of the differences, the nearest I can tell is that the G10 has a 24mm wide whilst the G9 is 35mm ( I believe these are adjusted number) What this means is that the G10 is going to be able to take better wide angle photos compared to the G9, so if you plan on doing landscapes (for example) the G10 might be worth a shot.

HOWEVER, for the price they are selling this at, I would definaitly consider this. As it stands, I'm going to go for this:

http://www.jessops.com/online.store/categories/products/Panasonic/Lumix%20DMC-LX3%20Digital%20Camera%20in%20Black-75167/Show.html

For £308.28 with teh NECTARXMAS10 code for 10% off. I know it's £80 more expensive but it apparently has much better low light shooting. For those interested in some shots have a look here:

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/Q408enthusiastgroup/

It won out over the G10 so I'm going to plump with it (and miss my extra cash) Note that the chdeapest I can find the G10 is £340 from Jacobs using the FPANDP to get free P&P.

This deal is a scorcher BTW. worth also noting that this can output to RAW for all those enthusiasts, and is often the case that if you take some care and time you can get some better pictures doing the post processing yourself compared to a JPEG from the camera. (Mind you, those who know RAW etc. are likely to know which compacts do it, so maybe it's a bit dedundant to mention)

Ooh. One other thing: For those who do do RAW, the G9 is noted for having a pretty quick write time, this is also worth considering.

Any how, Heat and Rep added! :santa:

Note though that although the G10 does a wide angle the G9 has a larger zoom i.e.
G9 35 - 210 mm
G10 28 - 140 mm

Would be my 1st choice too were it not for the fact that it's lens is only 24-60mm which is basically no zoom at all.

Both your points are very valid and both should factor into your purchase decision. Don't buy a camera because the faceless internets tells you it is great. Buy a camera that suits your needs. If you fancy doing wildlife the the LX3 is a no go. Pubs, clubs and landscapes the the LX3 might be a better choice.

Here's a little thing I've come across theough that might help:
http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK

basically a file that loads of an SD card that allows a wide range of cannon cameras to shoot in RAW. Not sure what cameras it works with and not sure how well it works, but might be worth considering for the cash strapped enthusiasts out there.

BTW I've never used this software, so have a look around and see what those faceless internets say about it :)

Got mine today! Time to sell the trusty old 350D...
#25
Have been monitoring price of this for a while watching it gradually fall. Then I saw it in here and paniced thinking that they'd all be gone from Amazon but still available so now eagerly awaiting delivery.
Replaces rather ageing Powershot A70 which has recently been repaired FOC by Canon and it will go on Ebay. Surprised to see that despite age they are still going for £35.
Makes net price for the G9 less than £200 - bargain. :)
