It's Argos, they have stores everywhere so most people don't need to pay for delivery!

Excellent find. If this is comparable with the A480 then this is a good price.

Warning, don't go for the special offer that Argos try to sell you when you buy this camera - 4GB class 2 SDHC card for £20!

only available for home delivery though

This is an Argos only version of the A495 (slightly hamstrung regarding the scenes the automatic mode recognises and there are possibly other minor differences).
The A495 is the upgrade of the old A480 model - it's currently around £110-£120 so this seems a good price.

Looks like a good deal to me, when you buy it though, get some decent rechargeable AA's - preferably hybrid type ones (Eneloop, Hybrio etc) as they'll last considerably longer than alkaline batteries and save you a fortune. If you don't have a battery charger, then budget for an extra £10 to buy a charger and 4 batteries (2 sets). 7dayshop often have decent offers.

It's not Argos only - it available more widely than that. Good price if it has similar quality to the A480.

You're right there Grahawk  The review I was looking at was saying the A490 was for Argos only which was clearly wrong - I should have checked around a little more...

Canon, so probably takes good pics, but as you say no rechargeable batteries supplied so it's really 75 quid plus to get yourself up and running with an entry level, plastic and quite bulky (because AA powered) camera. That's an OK price these days, not a red hot deal.

Based on what this one costs elsewhere I guess a hot vote is appropriate but don't believe the half price claim.

Overall I think you can probably do better at this price point.

PS These might help though:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/camera-reviews/canon/powershot-a490/post.html

'The Canon Powershot A490 will be available some time in February with a MSRP of US $109.99.'

Xe.com reports this as £73.66 GBP - so £64.99 not so hot. I think Besford has a point!

I might be missing point here......does that not make it a good deal?

Unfortunately it never works like that though. I'm sure this will settle down at about £90, similar to the A480, so £65 is a very good price particularly as it actually does a good job. Not sure there are many, if any, cameras of similar quality at this price.

£73.66 + 17.5% VAT = £86.55

I'll second that.
To say things like "Overall I think you can probably do better at this price point" without giving an example is a waste of time and space.

I cannot find one technical feature for the A495 that is better than the A480. I don't think , may be I am missing something, that there is any upgrade improvement. This is purely a cosmetic change or styling change, new model rather than an upgrade of functions and features.

OK but no less helpful than voting without any comment at all.

I haven't been searching today's deals so it would be potentially misleading to point you towards a specific camera but I do keep an eye on deals and the trend in 'bang for your buck' (which is getting better despite the fall in the pound). What I am saying is that, for around this money, there have been deals (and may be some out there now) which I think are superior for the reasons I gave (plastic, AA power, bulky, etc).

It is an entry level camera but from a very respected maker so is not to be dismissed. Canons do have a reputation for taking a good snap so it's probably fine in that respect. Probably ideal if you just pop a new set of batteries in twice a year for your holiday and Christmas snaps, but does that kind of user really want to pay the premium which is undoubtedly asked for a Canon?

Personally I'd always look at Panasonic first and, for example, the FS4 came and went in Tesco last year for similar money and it was a Li-ion powered camera with battery, charger, etc. Another example would be that a perfectly acceptable little AA powered Fuji has been posted a couple of times since Christmas as low as £49 (Jessops). It may not take take quite such a good pic to an expert eye but most users looking for a snapshot compact for this money probably wouldn't notice any difference.

As new ranges are now being launched for 2010 I'm sure more good deals on 2009 cameras will start emerging.

I'm simply suggesting you pause and look around rather than jumping for it because Mr Argos says it's half price.

Does that help?
