Not stupid at all, I've carted a french dresser home with no roof bars. All you need is some rachet straps, a mat of some description to rest it on and tie them through the door openings (open the doors first hehe).

A French dresser, didn't she fit in the passenger seat or boot, or was it because you didn't want your mates to see what you pulled for the night.

PS - I hope you told the good wife of your exploits.

We use a really simple set up on our Merc for lightish loads... (due to our requirements) ladders, projector screens & allsorts works really well & is incredibly small & light.

If you need something that packs away but does the job with a couple of minutes installation time (after you are familiar with it) or to shelp suspend a roof bag such as the one above on... check out this site, had ours a few years now it is excellent.

I don't think it was stupid. If you look at the second pic on the site....this one....

....it looks as though you could possibly get away with not having roof bars, as long as you have roof rails to thread the straps through.

Anyone know what speeds these are tested to?

and if you have roof rails you probably wont need bars
#12
we use one of these with roof rails. Does the trick for mats and bedding

Nah. As long as there's at least two of you it will stay on with you both holding it but changing gear could be a problem for manual gearboxes.

Obviously depends on the aerodynamics of the roof box and how you drive but on a long run with Thule aero bars and the official mini/thule roof box, my 1.6 cooper still does 50mpg at 70mph (down from about 54). Can cope with that for the added capacity.

Well it's a big 4x4 and it was in two parts, so my anecdote wasn't as funny as it would have first appeared. ;)
