This is a genuine halfords sale for a change.

also see the carrera Kraken at £320 if you want a higher level mountain bike.

The Subways are cracking bikes for the money. This is as cheap a bike as you'll likely to find that's not a supermarket death real
#3
6% Quidco online OR 4.5% instore.

Just read the reviews, sounds really good, any idea what sort of weight these bikes can carry?
#4
I work for halfords and i gotta say the subway 1 is a FANTASTIC bike and at that price is a bloody steal!
#5
and with my staff discount its £156!
#6
Would you guys recommend this over a Pashley Tube Rider? Many thanks.

I've got a Kraken. Bit heavy and sluggish for commuting but pretty tough. Don't think you'd get better than this for the money. Hot

Halfords Has Worst customer Service instore down our way, i usually end up walking away in disgust before i end up going "falling down" after 20+minute waits.
Yep they're on my blacklist..

The kraken is not a commuting bike.
The subway is more equipped for commuting, with kevlar, semi slick tyres,no suspension(saves weight)
The 2008 model is faster then the 2009 model though due to the road gear ratios on the 2008 and the mountain bike gear ratios on the 2009

Hi Nightyard. Was looking at getting Boardman road bike. Does Halfords ever discount these?
The Freeport branch broke both my windsceen wipers when fitting new blades!
#12
I've had about 6 bikes over a 3 month period and this is a great hybrid for the money!

I think that halfords customer service is pretty bad but the customer service in the bikes section is way better!

there are a few(lot) of a morons working for halfords :whistling:

the store I work at part time, has very competent staff who are all very friendly.

The boardmans will never be discounted, you can only expect them to discount last years models to clear stock and they dont discount them as soon as the next years models come through so its pretty rare to find any discounted boardmans from last years line,as they've all been sold for RRP.

If you know any student with a valid NUS EXTRA card, you can get 10% off your purchase (obviously..they have to "buy" the bike) and if you register your debit/card card for instore cashback with quidco, you'll be able to get 4.5% cashback on the purchase.

Expired. Now £229 which is still an ok price for a no-noncense commuter bike.

this one http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_551207_categoryId_165534_langId_-1?cm_vc=IOV4PDPZ1

I actually prefer the subway 1 even though the subway 2 is slightly better;the differences that i can see is the subway 2 has better gears, better rims, better chainset and disc brakes instead of v brakes,i think the v brakes are actually better then the disc brakes on bikes this price, definitely easier to adjust

AND MAYBE the frame is double butted as opposed to just butted but i cant remember off the top of my head

Definitely NOT expired - I wish people would read web pages...

BTW the 10% student (NUS Extra) discount wipes out the 20% web discount. I found this on the NUS site:
'Discount cannot be used in conjunction with web exclusive offers.'

That's a real shame, I was on the verge of buying.
#21
I've got the subway 2 and it's a good bike, not that heavy, but very rigid

My only real problem is with the tyres and rims, I've only had the bike 6 months and I've had 5 punctures on the rear wheel (no off road). Everytime I get a pucture I check the rim, inside tyre and tube and there doesn't seem to be any obstructions. (that's my only gripe)
#22
How heavy is this bike?

Just found it on the specs page of the website - 12.45 KG
#23
Hot! Great find. +7 for your efforts!

Hmm my girlfriend is a student, with a valid NUS extra card, how do you go about getting the NUS off too ? as well as cashback and the web deal ??

==========
edit....
OK I can see the webdeal and if you pay by registered card in the shop we can get 4.5 % more, but if I reserve it it says the price you see is the price you pay.. will they be happy to accept the NUS instore on top of this ?

Thanks

Not my experience with them at all, I found their service excellent when we bought our Son's bike from there before Christmas. We actually visited three stores, and the service across all three was consistently very good.

Can't believe my Kraken post didn't even make it to the hot list at £320 when the vengeance which was posted a few months back, which wasn't as good, went off the scale for just a few quid less.

I've just ordered this using Reserve and Collect, so it can be assembled in-store and collected on Friday. Can anyone confirm when this 20% off Web Offer is due to expire. And if so, will I be able to secure the price that I've 'reserved' it for? Just a bit dubious, as no payment details have actually been given yet?

ring your local branch for confirmation...and ride it round the car park and check it goes into every gear when you pick it up, so they can do any adjustments before you take it away.

It depends who serves you,I wouldnt have a problem putting the NUS discount through on top,but others may.
at any rate, even with just the online discount and the cashback its a bargin,so if you manage to get the NUS discount too, then you've got a real good deal.

I brought one of these last October and it's fantastic, although I had been riding around on a steel framed mountain bike for the previous few years, so maybe any bike would have seemed great after that. At the time I was looking at a bike with disc brakes but as I previous poster has said on the cheaper versions it appears that V brakes are best and the brakes on this are brilliant.
#38
what are there appolo bikes like as there is one for £400 down to £150 ? or is this not a very good make of bike thanks
banned#39
Don't buy the appolo, steer well clear....they ain't in the same league as Carrara. Carrara build a Good standard of bike for the money, and have some real class winners amongst the price range they cater for.

Went to halfords saturday to get my son a new bike, was looking at the carrera blast at £199,the lad working there suggested a small size adult bike instead as it would last him longer,in the clearance section there was kona shred (2007) model,it had no price on it but was a bargain £170! he loves the bike to bits and from what ive read they can take a beating! so if anybody does go to halfords check the clearance section, theres some bargains to be had!
