Carrera Virago Limited Edition Carbon Road Bike £999.00 @ Halfords (Perfect for Bike2Work Scheme)

AeschylusAeschylus

A carbon road bike for under £1000, is no bad thing, couple this with the bike2work scheme and you have yourself a bargain.

The Bad
It's Halfords and a lot of employment places will only use Halfords (fact)

if you are heavy chap like me, a carbon bike is not going to help, in fact if you watched the gadget show review on Carbon vs Heavy bikes, Heavy bikes actually came out the winner (though it was a very loose test) as going downhill you get more speed on a heavy bike..

But if you want to look stupid in Lycra and have a bike to work scheme that insists on halfords, then I think this is a bargain, if you dont have a bike 2 work scheme, I would not go anywhere near Halfords!!

I would probably get a ribble evo pro carbon. Much better wheels and full shimano 105 groupset.

your missing the point, I said in my OP if you dont have a bike2work scheme that insists on halford this is not for you, but for £499 this is a steal

I really don't think the bike2work scheme is all its cracked up to be. I bought a hard rock sport disc 2 years ago and about £250 worth of clothing and accessories. I paid about £500 back over the 10 months but then found out I didn't even own the bike at that point. I would have had to pay around £300 to own the bike outright and this amount reduces every year up until the point where I have to pay a nominal £1 or something after 5 years. Shouldn't be a problem providing your prepared to stay with your current employer for that period of time. I really see this scheme as more of an interest free payment scheme. For anyone planning on using this scheme, I would say use it to also get some decent accessories and clothing in order to maximise the savings you will get from it. I would also go with the boardman bike too if I was spending this amount of money. Then again, the rules might have changed again in the last year and I might be just talking a load of ****. Apologies in advanTce if I am.

fatcatsatonthemat is spot on, cycle to work USED TO BE good.....but they changed the % you save over the course of the bike and it is now rubbish. Most people will get 32% off the bike using the scheme and pay off the 68% over the year. During this time the company own the bike and you are meant to use it for cycling to work only (although not sure how they can enforce this). However at the end of 12 months you have to effectively buy the bike off the company at 25% of the original value. Total % saving is 7% for most (unless you are in higher tax bracket). You can extend the loan period by 3 years I think but basically for a 7% saving you are better off getting a bike on sale, add a couple of discount codes, got through cashback and put it on a credit card.

ribble sportif bianco any day over this

    Ribble for me too.
Choose your own components (Campag, Shimano, SRAM), choose stem length, crank arm length, freewheel cluster and chainrings, handlebar width - customise it to fit you and all for less than this Carrera.
I've had Ribble's for years (decades) always great build quality and fit...

I have just finished the C2W scheme and thought it was great, saved a packet and have just had the final email to buy the bike, a £650 bike will cost me £32 as a final payment as we only have to pay the tax on the final value.

Just been offered the Bike work scheme here and bascially yet 30% odd off from pre tax deductions. But have been assured I'll own the Bike after the 12 monthly payments. Can anyone recommend anywhere decent that participates as seems like you could save more than 30% by buying online, but the scheme is only used in shops?

Most Bike shops I have been, will remove any discounts and apply Full Retail price to any Cycle to Work scheme vouchers, so as far as I can tell, it's not a certainty I will pay less, as I have no idea of what the final payment will be.
In the end I purchased a bike with a big discount, via Credit Card for loyalty points, I am sure the cost will work out cheaper than the Scheme.
The only benefit I can see, is the interest free monthly payments over 12 months.
