However, if you're taking A-level maths, I reckon it might be worth investing in a graphical calculator. I borrowed one from school and I think it gained me several marks per exam by allowing me to check certain answers.

You are not supposed to be allowed graphical calculators in exams and never have been.

If you get caught with a graphical calculator they will pull you out rip up your paper and fail you. It is classed as and is cheating, which you just stated, you could check your answers, other students could not, it pretty much is giving you the answer.

Also when I was in High school I got these for £1.99 all the time, so how is it a deal? At a total loss.

Presumably its been voted hot as this is the cheapest price for this model? To compare this with the price your bought it at school isn't valid - what to say the £1.99 price you paid wasn't subsidised in some way?

I done A Level maths, on the front of the paper it said 'you are NOT permitted to use a graphical calculator' and they reminded us several times. Reason being it would give you an advantage over anyone who does not have one, the exams are written in a way that graphical calculators should not be needed.

Using any calculator that has a facility for symbolic algebra, differentiation and/or integration is classed as cheating.

this is the best "simple" calculator you can get, i had one of the older versions of this from....ages ago up until recently when i misplaced it. I was actually going to buy this model at £7.99 from my university(!)

Well, my store is not that big, smaller than a lot of stores, but bigger than a Central/Local store. I think most Sainsbury's stores sell Stationary, and that's where these ones where.

ha ha I knew I should not have clicked onto that Maths paper - it would take more than a good calculator for me to pass that! Good price tho I paid a lot more than this for daughter's

Only applies to non calculator papers and Core or pure 1 maths.

Personally unless you are going for an A* at GCSE I would steer clear of this calculator and get a Sharp.

Problems with this calculator for "less able" students include:

squaring negatives - if your type in -2^2 it gives you -4 !!

Use of surds - type in 10sin60 and it will reply 5root3 not 8.66... also 5 divided by 2 is 5/2 not 2.5

You can solve the surd problems by going to setup->LineIO but the negatives squares problem remains. The Sharp will automatically put the -2 in brackets before squaring giving you the right answer. This leads to a lot of mistakes on quadratic graph plotting since most people don't even realise this.

Also there's a button which looks like this (S < => D) which turns answers from surds/fractions to decimals. It's a really useful feature that it gives them to you in exact form.

I just got back from wilkinsons and bought myself one of these as a back up to my same model that i use in civil engineering.....for £5!!!

i thought that was such a steal.......i was wrong.

You might just be onto something! I guess it depends on the exam board and the paper you're taking. There's a lot of variety out there.

This is definitely a good price for this calculator. The cheapest I've been able to find them is around a fiver in Wilkinsons.

As a current A-level maths student, I can confirm you can use graphical calculators. The ones banned are the ones that allow symbolic integration.

I can't say there is really a huge benefit of having a graphical calculator over this one though.

You are meant to put the negative you are squaring in brackets, otherwise it won't know whether you mean the negative of the value squared, or the negative squared.

Press the F - D button and it changes it to a decimal. The surd function is very useful as many questions ask for the exact value, so if it gives you a decimal you won't be able to use the calculator - you would have to do the whole question using the rules of surds. As you say, you can turn it off if you don't want it.

Most maths students don't realise the calculator isn't including the negative sign in the square? I've never met one that didn't know how to use the calculator, its common sense really.

Also, to be honest (and I'm not being mean here), any student who doesn't know that -2 squared is 4 and not -4 really shouldn't be doing A level maths. There are things that are WAY more complicated in the paper! I would go along with that argument if we were discussing GCSE, but what hope does somebody have of tackling integration if they can't do [simple] multiplication properly without a calculator! I thought that this two negatives make a positive stuff was a primary school thing...
