With ever increasing fuel prices at the pumps, it is more vital than ever before to be economic when driving. Altering your driving style, ensuring tyres are topped up and using the correct engine oil all help improve a car’s fuel economy.

When selecting the right engine oil, it’s good to know the brand you choose is widely acknowledged as the World’s leading specialist provider of lubricant solutions. Castrol was found by Charles Cheers Wakefield in 1899, who passionately believed in working alongside his customers to develop the right products and services. He had the foresight to recognise that prosperity for both parties would be best achieved in partnership. This philosophy remains as successful and as relevant at Castrol today as it was then.

Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5W-40 is designed for Volkswagen Pumpe Duse Diesel (PDD) engines and other pre-2002 Diesel engines. It is formulated to maintain engine performance whilst fighting against harmful deposits – minimising the cost of ownership by extending the life of exhaust systems. Also offers peace of mind that if you have a VW Diesel on fixed servicing, then this is the right oil for you.

Comes in a 4 litre bottle.

That's an insanely good price for this oil.

This is suitable for my '02 VW and this is £10 cheaper than I can find any suitable oil.

Thanks OP

Or you could go for this from ecp http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/car-accessories/engine-oils-and-car-fluids/engineoils/5w40-engine-oil/?521776081&0&cc5_248 it works out at £23.48 using code and you get 1Lt extra and a free oil filter thrown in.

Please read this and then convince me that this oil is really good for the dpf/egr http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html (go down to the bottom and check the api ratings....... this edge is api sm/cf and triple qx is sn/cf) . As you will see, although cf is a current rating only ci and cj rated oils really look after your egr/dpf systems.

I can't see how that is possible. The oil should not be near the DPF. If it is its because your engine is worn and it will pass through the combustion process and I very much doubt any cleaning agents would survive the process.

I would expect it will have a lower SAPS value, extra sludge reduction agents and a long life stabilising agent due to extended service intivals.

Now the question. Would you get more benefit using this oil and doing 18k between services or using a normal fully synthetic at half the price every 9k?

first of all i would never let my car go to 18k miles before a service and i service my car every 8k miles so that means i service my car 3 times a year and have down since i got it.i change oil every 8k since 75,000miles on the clock and before that was every 12,000.i change fuel, air and oil filters as well with every service and that is on both cars. and they have never broken down once as one car has 142,000 on clock and that is a 05 and the other has 103,000 on clock and is an 04.at 75,000 on each car has timing belt, pulleys, and pump changed.105,000 clutch was changed, and on the 05 car when it reached 140,000 fly wheel, clutch plate and timing kit was done along with the front and front rear bushens replaced as well.. all thou the work did not need done i got it done at the recommended intervals so to prolong the life the of the engine and the cars.100,000 mile replace track end rods.
and to top it off i know i can get £3200 for my 05 car and i can get £4000 for my 04 car if i was to sell them today but i am not. moral is it you look after it, then it will last.

oil is used to provide a lub on your engine parts and provides less friction and clean out debris in your engine and debris sticks in the filter.all car manufacturers recommend that you change your oil every 12 months or 12,000 miles which ever comes soonest.so where are you getting 18,000 out of?

Well everybody has different milage but but most are between 10k and 12k. However some are much longer like VW "up to a maximum of 18,000* miles or 24 months (whichever occurs first)".
