Castrol Edge is more than twice the price :(. However it is excellent oil, designed specifically for VW, I use it in my 54 1.9tdi Passat and its just clocked up 240,000 miles and still runs like new!

I seem to remember that this is not actually fully synthetic (but synthetically engineered) - The Edge is fully synthetic. This was discussed some time back in another post, also check castrol website. Thought I would just drop that one in!

4 litres of semi synthetic for £20 is not a good deal.

A little more homework needed, cragster - a couple of grades of Magnatec aren't fully synthetic, but this grade is. They state either "Fully synthetic" or "Part synthetic" on the bottles, according to ... well, you can probably guess the rest.

From Castrol's own website: "10.Is Castrol Magnatec Synthetic or Part-Synthetic?
Castrol Magnatec 5W-30A1 and Castrol Magnatec Diesel 5W-40 A3/B4 are fully synthetic formulations providing quicker circulation at extremely cold temperatures and superior performance at high operating temperatures.

Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 and 15W-40 are both part-synthetic. All grades of Castrol Magnatec contain Intelligent Molecules that cling to critical engine parts to instantly protect from the moment you turn the key."

Heat from me - £20 for four litres of Castrol fully synthetic oil is a good price. If you have a Ford or summat that has the same requirements, this is a great deal (though not as good as the one a couple of months back where Asda were selling the same stuff for £3 a litre bottle!)

Okay for BMW Mini too. I got some of this about a week ago from Asda for £24

If anyone is a member of Costco you can get 2 x 4l for around £30

Ford owners can get Genuine Ford Oil, 5W30 Formula F, 5litres, Fully Synthetic
for less than £20.

I Have a seat altea and according to castrol number plate checker i need the CASTROL EDGE stuff and its about £14 for a litre bottle. or £41.99 for 5 litres for halfords own make. I think it has to meet vw spec 507.00 or something like that.
#14
there are some other castrol oils on offer at b&q as well for different car models.

If it needs VW 502.00/505.01 for PD without DPF, try getting 4x5l of GM Dexos 2 from a Vauxhall dealer, you have to say you're a taxi driver and would like the 4x5 litre deal. It has been going for years. It was £48 for 20 litres a few months ago.

*facepalm*

5/30 oil is used in High perfomance petrol or diesel engines, or for those on longlife services (usually every 20k miles) its better to get a bigger bottle than needed as a few weeks after filling the oil level drops & needs to be topped up

<-- Sells oil on market so i know my stuff :)

And no, Ford/BMW/VW etc DO NOT MAKE OIL, its pretty much the same stuff just bottled differently, VAG (Vw/Audi/Seat/Skoda) oil is usually sold as Quantum Synta but its actually Castrol (i think)

And General Motor oil is just Mobil 1 (or vice versa with the Castrol)

Might be worth nipping up your local agents & buying it, trade price for 5l of 5/30w is about £15 excl vat so its about £18 for 5L

edit: just to add it might be worth using this in an older petrol that smokes a lot, it being fully synthetic means it isnt as smokey when used so helps with the exhaust emissions or something

the vw 504(petrol)/507(diesel) replaces the 502/505.01 old standards so 507 is appropriate for PD diesel

don't know if this magnatec is 504/507 but i know asda do the Castrol Edge 504/507 for £30 4 litres which is excellent for me
