Bit like comparing a Lada with a Merc (in my opinion of course!)

This is also a good price if you need a tail light + don't forget 5% code

Ordered this for hubby he was not impressed with it at all, He has the Exposure Maxx joystick which goes on your helmet or you can buy a handlebar bracket for you serious bikers out there, it is quite pricey but worth it . Don't shoot me £144 plus £20 for bracket from Wiggle.

Its a pretty decent light and at this price its a bargain, there are better lights out there, but they cost 10 times the price (or more), this light is far far better than anything you will get for the same money in Argos or Tesco.

Hmm, a bit misleading, the Exposure lights are really for off road night riding, they would be a massive overkill for a commute which is were the catseye light comes in...

Cateye have a good reputation and this is one of their better lights as I understand it.

I recently got the EL-520, which AFAICT is mechanically the same, but brighter. A couple of thoughts:

The case feels a bit flimsy when changing the batteries, so take care.

The 1 Watt LED will cast a beam. It won't light up a pitch black country lane/tow path so you can see*, but good for getting seen on streets.
At this price the EL-510 is a bargain that will outshine it's peers. Highly recommended.

* I would expect to pay > £50 to achieve that.

I have the EL-520 which I was really impressed with, very bright. Also have the LD600 rear light which is also good.

For £1 more I would definitely go for this one instead, it's got 3 LED instead of one, and the very convenient "Easy Tight" bracket system which lets you install (or remove) the kit in less than 30 seconds.

In fact that's the one I'm using at the moment and I'm very happy with it, light and compact enough to fit in a pocket, and it feels solid enough.
I bought it for £5 more at Evans Cycles, so definitely hot!

It may be better, but number of LEDs is not an indication of effectiveness at all.

Not all LEDs are created equal. That light takes only 2 batteries and lasts longer, it won't be nearly as bright. From the picture, they both have the same mounting bracket.

My husband commutes and if its safety you want you have the best and the Cateye was not as good as the Exposure, some people have to commute at 5.30 in the morning when some car drivers are still half asleep. So good lights are a must as is proper kit. Cateye is a good brand he has loads of their stuff including this light but this isn't good enough for the roads he rides to work on !

The exposure joystick maxx is certainly much brighter than the cateye 510, but there is no side visibility.
If you look at the cateye 510, light comes out of the slits at the side of the lamp.
This is important at junctions.
If you want a cheap, brighter light in the same league at the joystick maxx, try one of the tesco instore only, £10, 2xAA, led tourches, though this also has no side visability.

Tempted by this as well, however I decided i'll use my old light in conjunction with the OP's super-bright LED light to get a hopefully similar effect.

Not all LEDs are created equal.
Indeed, which is why you cannot say
That light takes only 2 batteries and lasts longer, it won't be nearly as bright.
because the LEDs in the second lamp may be much more efficient than in the first.

Deal Extreme - 900 lumen (manufacturer rated) torch and a handle bar bracket - £25ish

Look for the SSC P7 LED's or if you want better run time - a 225 Lumen Q5

I bought a few of the $3 ones for the gloves boxes of my 2 cars and as stocking fillers last xmas, they're great.

has anyone tried buying lights from these guys - http://www.ledshoppe.com/ledproductothers.htm
I bought a few pocket torches from them last year for xmas stocking fillers and I must say they do a real good job. Just bought some of the bike lights - awaiting delivery - will report back and tell you how I got on.
