I don't know if there is any reason why the grated version would be of a lesser quality than the same cheese in block forms and certainly this seems to be a decent price.

Fair comment, but in Tesco at least, the non-grated blocks are much more expensive, so with this deal you save money and get to spend 30 seconds doing something else.

Cathedral City is the best selling branded cheese by far. However, Tesco own brand is probably the best selling cheese!

Quality wise this is exactly the same as the normal Cathedral City - you notice how the blocks are uniform, exactly the same squared-off size (compared with your value cheese which is all shapes and sizes, rounded edges, etc.), which means that there are off-cuts from the large blocks they are cut from, and the off-cuts get sent for grating.

ok and im i the only person who thinks that this cheese kinda melts in the mouth?
#13
Damn , now I want cheese on toast !
#14
The grated version does not taste as nice as the blocks of cheese for some bizarre reason, its ok if you're gonna melt it for cheese on toast for example, but i wouldn't buy it again.

For all of you Cheddar Cheese buffs.......
You have really got to try Yeo Valley Organic Mature Cheddar Cheese!!!!
It is simply HEAVEN!!!
It is currently on offer for £2.79 for 400g block at Tesco
:santa:

Voted hot! Picked up 600g for £3.03 against their offer on the block cheese of £3 for 400g. Bargain!

If it takes you only 30 seconds to grate some cheese , then im not having sammichs @ your house.
Seems to take me about 10 mins , what with washing up and all.

Just popped into Morrisions ... the cathedral city block (400g/maybe 350g the standard block size) is down to £1.79 there.... seems much better value, for those of us with a cheese grater!

On offer for the next 3 weeks.

I went to a cooking party and they told us that grated cheese is cheese which is nearing sell by date which they grate and cover in some starchy coating (always tastes different to me) and they told us this is why the grated cheese tends to go off alot quicker than standard block cheese.

Whether true or not unsure however the grated stuff does taste different and tends to go mouldy quickly?

Although not advertised in my Local Asda which is Cambridge by the way and they always hide the special offers-i.e-they never display the offer cards-Ever!! Ok rant over Anyway so, i checked online yesterday and lo and behold our most favourite cheddar CATHEDRAL CITY mature lighter or normal is 2 for £3 for the 200g size, checked on my receipt from shopping last night and it has come through!

So if you dont have a Morrisons local where you can get the 400g size for £1.79 then Get down to Asda guys!

Unless I'm not reading it correctly, the Asda offer gives you 400g of cheese for £3.00. This is a lot more expensive than both the offer posted here (600g for £3.09) and the Morrison's offer of 400g for £1.79.

Not me, I find it has a slight bitty/gritty texture compared to other cheeses (which you can see from the slight layering and crystalline "marble" effect). Ideal as cheap bulk "coloured fat" for cooking though.

Is that what they call damning with faint praise or just good old northern straight talking?

It's what I label all cheese in an attempt to stave off my craving for "just one more piece" when facing a cheesboard. Doesn't seem to work though :)

WTF ?
#32
Read the ingredients next time you buy some.
Grated cheese is mixed with potato starch.
#33
THe potato starch is to stop it all clumping together, I used to buy a block of cheese and grate it all and store it in a tupperware box and it all used to stick together in a lump and sweat.

They coat it in the potato starch and it stops this happening.

Personally I find it utterly bland.
