21.4" seat tube.. that is large for an MTB, don't buy unless you really are massive. riding an over-large MTB frame is a serious problem if you go off road.

/me been riding MTBs for 14 years.

also the spec is not great this was never worth £400 imho.. more like £300.

edit: was also going to say, will need some assembly, get someone competent or a shop to do it for you.

CRC is a decent site i use them all the time.

At first I had no idea what you were talking about, MTB, CRC :p

No way were these bikes worth £400 specification wise, this is an "average" deal, nothing spectacular, I am sure shopping around a few bike stores you could get a last years model bike by a lot of decent brands with the same sort of savings.

Seemed to get a better reception 6 months ago when it was £69 more!

thanks smiff -- would have been hooked COLD

i wouldn't say its cold, just think carefully.. if you're not sure what you're doing, go to a bike shop!

also note the clipless pedals.. those are probably the best budget clipless pedals around, but, most people in this price range probably don't want them (have to buy special shoes..) so budget for replacement pedals (or shoes!)..

Sorry, its not just pride talking here (seeing as I own one of these), but I can't see this spec being found on a bike with a RRP around the £300 mark. I did a lot of research before buying this (including a test ride on the XL size frame with a cheaper spec) and couldn't find anything close. Admittedly I'm looking for a big bike (because I really am err... massive!) and most of the 2008 models still in the shops/internet are in the smaller sizes that don't sell so well. The poster above is spot on about the pedals being superb and another reason I went for this is that I'd be buying a pair and putting them on any other bike I bought - which for this price range are generally poor quality platform types.

Common sense with bikes is to try before you buy - but I credit you all with that.

A basic web search shows the GT Avalanche 3.0 2008 still available for £230 (poorer spec -Shimano Alivio predominantly) and the 2009 versions of mountain bikes seem to be generally downgraded or more expensive.

And users of this forum voted this very bike hot (230 degrees) when it was on sale for £319!!!!

Yeah buy it's credit crunch time now. We want more for less, and for the specs I'd shop around for a better bike.

I think the problem is its only in XL and isn't suitable for most people so they wont vote it hot.
If all sizes were this price I would have expected it to be hot, but as it's only suitable for people over 6"3" that leaves most people out.
There are always massive discounts on 14" bikes but unless your under 5"6" there not a deal for you.
So if your over 6"3" and your looking for a bike about the £250 price then this is a good choice.

The credit crunch was well underway in September and it is £69 less now. I'm looking for another bike for my wife so if you do know of a better spec bike for this price then lets hear it! As I said the 2009 bikes are generally looking to be poorer value than the 2008 so I'd encourage anyone thinking about a new bike and with cash to spare to seek out the remaining 2008 bikes and go for it now.

I take your point (although I thought the idea was to vote on the strength of the bargain not whether it suits your physique!). I aint really to bothered by the temperature thing - it just irks me when people post broad platitudes about there being better out there for the price, but don't back it up by saying what, where and for how much.

Anyhow - someone must agree with because ther's only 12 now!
