This is a BEAUTY to have around the home is you don't have air-con/can't afford it.

You basically fill the tank with cold water (drop some ice cubes in there if you wish!) and a fabric belt picks up the cold water and sends it behind a fan (don't worry, you don't get wet!).

These work wonders with this hot weather! It includes an ioniser, heater, timer and an oscillation mode.

From previous posts of these things, they are next to being useless, they will not drop the temperature at all, and always seem to be sold off

Im going to vote this hot because this is the exact air cooler I have and it works very well. Of course you are only circulating air around and are not removing the warm air (as an air con unit does), but this unit does send out pretty cold air (much better than a normal round fan, or one of those slimline tower things).

If you can afford/vent/fit a proper AC unit then do so, however if you cant this is an excellent cheaper alternative.

They are not designed to drop the temperature - that is what an air con unit is for - these are designed to circulate cooler air, and in that respect this is one of the better units.

From having 3 of these around the house I can say that they're wonderful if you fill them with cold water and have good airflow.
I couldn't do without them!
They also seem great for hayfever which is a bonus

While they do a reasonable job I wouldn't go down this route as they also raise the relative humidity and can cause condesation issues in cooler parts of the huse

Shame you can't try it out for 16 days with the argos 'guarantee' as they have to be returned unused.

Curious how noisy they are, and what they cost to run too

I often have mine on when sleeping and the noise doesnt stop that. When I have it on and am watching TV I usually have to up the volume by 3 numbers to cancel out the unit. its not immensely noisy, but obviously it isn't silent, and is quieter than the AC unit I tried to find a way to use in my house.

As for cost - it cannot be that much as Ive never noticed any real increase in my electric costs during the months I use it.

+1

It is more effective to run your wrists under cold water to cool down than having one of those running all day, (using electricity + generating extra heat from the motor). Completely useless. I have tried one of those from Argos and returned it for a refund.

swamp coolers like this are great in hot and dry climates, they are used all over the middle east for example and work well due to the low humidity there, problem is the higher the humidity of the normal air the less effective they become, I can't see them working as well over here.
