I was thinking about getting the Halfords £99.99 150 piece professional set

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?mpe_id=62857&cm_cr=No+Campaign-_-Web+Activity-_-SC+Carousel+370635-_-PRODHOME_ESPOTCAROUSEL-_-Halfords+Advanced+Professional+150+piece+Socket%2FRatchet+Set&catalogId=10151&evtype=CpgnClick&intv_id=116436&langId=-1&partNumber=370635&storeId=10001&ddkey=ClickInfo

or the £49.99 64 piece set

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_241771_langId_-1_categoryId_165572

I only really need it for odd jobs around the house - from experience I know a bad socket set can ruin plumbing work. Should the 64 piece one be enough? The 150 piece one seems to be reviewed mainly by people who are into car maintance and I have no intention of doing that.

should be oright with the 49 set, halfords is an improvment but you'll probably find a better one on here-http://www.screwfix.com/

These will be junk.

For most plumbing jobs a socket set isn't useful. Most plumbing nuts are huge, and inaccessible to sockets. You need large open-ended spanners, typically adjustables. Such as the Bahco wide-jaw range. Screwfix sell just one:

You also may need specialist tools such as a basin wrench:

The Halfords sets are excellent though. I would be careful buying from screwfix as a lot of what they sell is junk. They do sell some Bahco though, which are excellent. Likewise CK, Facom, Britool. Halfords are probably next, then Teng.

i got a set for around £150 from halfords, can't fault it. used it 100's of times on the bikes and never had any problems. challenge ones are useless and will last 5 minutes.

As already mentioned for a plumbing job a socket set is a waste of time (Halfords pro sets are good quality tho) best places for plumbing gear are screwfix/wickes/toolstation/machine mart - a cheap set of adjustable spanners are ok but pay for a good quality pair of waterpump pliers even if its just a one off job.
