DON'T FORGET THE ADDITIONAL CANOPY CONVERTER IF YOU HAVE A CANOPY-STYLE DOOR

Please don't expire if temporarily out of stock online becuse for 15% more (still a good price) plenty of stores have stock, and the online stock does seem to be replenished from week to week.

Online only if you want to use the Wickes 15% discount code included in my price. Free delivery.

OK this is not a short-term promotion from the looks of it. However, the beauty of this deal is that the product is branded as Wickes own on their website, when in fact you get a proper Chamberlain boxed ML850 garage door opener. It is belt-drive, which is far quieter and smoother than the chain drive model I had a few years ago. That model got sold with my house, rather than needing replacement, so even if this didn't have its 5 year guarantee, I'd be confident in it.

You get far more than in the slightly cheaper chain drive model because you additionally get:
* Quiet and smooth belt drive model with stornger motor rather than noisy chain
* Two keyfobs rather than one (retail £17 each AT Wickes, £30 elsewhere, this alone covers the difference in price)
* Numeric keypad entry control
* Safety light-beam sensors to protect your children and pets

Note if you have a canopy door (google it) you will also need the following converter piece at £29 (after 15% discount).
http://www.wickes.co.uk/Canopy-Converter-For-Electric-Opener/invt/203008

The price I've quoted takes into account the Wickes 15% at-checkout discount promotion running until January 2011. My topcashback tracked but reduced to zero when I used this voucher code, so no further cashback as it seems to be a Wickes mail order brochure code.

So how much would this cost elsewhere? Screwfix, who sell for normal "cheapest" prices for the Chamberlain brand, quote £180 for the opener plus £45 for the canopy converter arm if required. So with Wickes you get both items for less than the cost of the opener.

Voucher code link (seems to be under WIckes vouchercode rather than Wickes so not linked to this deal posting).

http://www.hotukdeals.com/vouchers/spend-50-or-more-online-or-by-phone/761967

End date for voucher code is given 3rd Jan 2011 - after that it may end up costing you 15% more, which is still a great deal versus screwfix.

Have got this unit myself on a double car garage, definately recommend it. When they tried to break in last year the mechanism was the only thing that stopped them getting the door fully open - it wouldn't budge. Got me a nice new door on the insurance though.

Glad to hear that, have always wondered how it would cope if someone tried to force it open. This new version seems to be much stronger when I try to force it than the chain version I used to have.

Looks a good price so heat for it:)

I know notihng at all about these things but at £62 under Wickes own brand you can't argue

If you need a canopy converter think twice.. it really reduces the car height you can put in the garage, and i also found it didn't really work that well.
Basically, Good deal if your garage door comes with horizontal runners, not really worth it if your garage door is an up and over and has vertical runners up each side of the door.
Agree with your comments about chain drive and worth having 2 fobs, are you sure it comes with Keypad aswell??

Sounds like a great deal. But how is the installation? Is it do-able on my own without much skill and tools? Dont really fancy to spend much to hire people to fit it for me

Will definately do more research as I have absolutely no idea which door type I have with the garage. Thanks op!

Basically, if you can handle a screwdriver, drill and can follow simple instructions its a doddle...

I fitted one to my dads roller door (3 car wide) and it was quite straightforward. It didnt need a canopy arm on that one.

I then fitted a second one on my own garage including a canopy arm in 1 afternoon, no problems at all. Good reliable units, strong and easy to fit. Cant recommend them enough.....

Got one very similar to this unit. Not normally a fan of gadgets for lazy people but this is a good idea. Far more secure than a regular garage door. I mean you can open the door, drive in and close door without leaving your car ... good if you live in a dodgy area I guess. Plus it basically locks the garage door behind you each time the door is closed. Easy to install and very little maintenance required. Good price, get one.

Definitely comes with a keypad. Canopy converter works fine for me, what really helped was oiling the runners on the garage door, that made it lift significantly higher (to my surprise - I was amazed a bit of oild could make so much difference for a motor pulling 50kg of steel door). Now oiled, it raises to about 190cm off the ground, dipping 10cm or so lower on the small portion where the canopy arm was fitted.

Installation SHOULD be easy (had no problems on previous garage) but was tricky for me. This was because (a) Above my garage door opening is a steel lintel which I had to put a mounting board on (wooden beams are easy to mount the opener bracket on) and (b) My lintel protrudes inwards, about 15cm in versus the garage door. Difficult, time consuming, but not impossible.

Key areas which take time are things like concrete / steel lintels ... getting the right drill bits i you have to mount a canopy arm on your garage door ... if you have a canopy door, assuming it has "plates" onto which you can mount at the top/centre and middle/centre of the door ... and making sure you can attach the opener to the ceiling (exposed beams are fine ... if plasterboard you'll need to find solid studs to mount to).

Just tried ordering one, it shows the item as in stock, it allows me to put one in my basket, but when I come to submit my order it says I can only order "0" items!

Anyone having / had the same problem?
#14
If they are out of stock, please don't expire, they do seem to get new stock in, this isn't end of line at Wickes.
#15
Just tried ordering and also getting
"Only 0 of Belt Drive Garage Door Opener available. You may only order 0 Items"
when I try to checkout
#16
Oops, sounds like they may have run out of stock. I think they do have them in some stores, sometimes not on display but you need to ask for them. But you don't get the extra 15% discount.
#17
Winchman - Can you expand on why this doesn't work well with up-and-over doors? I understand it will reduce the height in the garage (which may be a pain for me opening my hatchback tailgate..) but in what way will/might the operation prove poor?
#18
Seems to have been expired because temporarily out of stock online. But if you can live with paying 15% more, I'm sure some stores will have stock.
#19
This is not Expired. I have just rung the telephone order line 0845 274 1000 and used the discount code posted and got the opener for £118, free delivery tomorrow.

Please do remember to get the canopy converter if you have a canopy door. There are a few variants, but broadly speaking, a canopy door overhangs your driveway (by about 1/3 of the door panel) when it is fully open. This opener will not operate this kind of door without the converter.

A non-canopy door such as a retractable tends not to voerhang the drieway, and has horizontal runners extending from each side of the top of the door into the garage.

Just also ordered one over the phone, he called the warehouse and they confirmed 2 left in stock following my order.

I fitted one of these when I moved into my house 4 years ago. Still going strong with no problems. The only thing that went pretty quickly was the bulb in the light. No big deal, I havent bothered replacing it but you need something like a truck headlight bulb as a replacement (24V IIRC).

Great in the winter: get in the car, blip the door open, drive out, blip shut and away you go. No getting wet and windswept when you get out to close the garage door!

Also has an emrgency delatch mechanism so you can open the door manually in a powercut.

Thanks

Thanks, just ordered on line, our old one had given up the ghost and a repair was more than this. Should arrive tomorrow, ordered via Quidco, so will see if I get that 3% too. DG

How old was your other one?
#28
I fitted a Chamberlain chain drive model 15 years ago and it's still going strong !
#29
Apparently you can still order by calling 0845 274 1000 and they will still apply the discount. Only disadvantage of doing this way is the 0845 call charge + no quidco possibility :p

There are also quite a few stores near me stock them

Ordered the converter as well and I can investigate later, if I dont need it it can be simply returned to local store.

Again thank you op, would be nice if it can be unexpired as it is still possible to buy over the phone at 6:40pm Nov 09.
#30
How would I get it unexpired, anyone know?

seems you need to pm a mod, or click on report/spam and select "Other" and ask to unexpire deal

Thats what a quick google told me, might be outdated though X)

... and now unexpired

Ordered mine yesterday, due for delivery between 3 & 4 today, Quidco 3% tracked as well. This was cheaper than having our old one repaired.

Anyone know of a good/cheap source for an emergency lock release (for garages without other entrances) for this please? Wickes don't seem to list one.

I *think* it comes with one, but never needed to fit it myself as have always had another door on the garage.

Mainly because the motor is pulling horizontally and runners are vertical, that why you need the canopy converter. As someone has said well oiled trackways will help but i found that it almost bent the door when it was operating and would stick a lot so gave up in the end. The canopy converter attaches to the inside of your door, of course when the door is open its above you, i would think if you have a people carrier or higher it would be worth checking to see if it fits under it, also allow for the reduction in height by the door as it opens, important if your car is close to the garage door when parked.

Just got a phone call from Wickes customer services, I ordered my opener yesterday by phone (with the canopy adapter) but they won't be be delivered today as apparently they had less stock than listed and some were damaged.

They have already ordered more from the supplier and expect them to arrive today and I should have my order tomorrow. If it isn't going to arrive tomorrow Wickes said they will call me again to advise, refreshing to have pro-active customer services!

Will post any more news as it comes.

I was very impressed by Wickes' next-day delivery service, to say it's free of charge when you spend a relatively small amount. Refreshing to hear their other customer service when things go wrong is also good.
