Tesco Finest Chateauneuf du Pape, one of my favourite wines and also a great present at any party, can be purchased for £5.33 delivered from Tesco Wines.

It currently is discouted from £10 a bottle to £6.17 a bottle, but using a discount code got the price down further.

The order I placed was for 3 cases (18 bottles) which comes to £110.97. As it's over £99 it's free delivery.

I also used the code XX-CERT to get a further £15 off.

If you've not had this wine before, then the Tesco version is excellent.

What our wine expert said...

"From the southern Rhône Valley, close to the historic city of Avignon, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is one of Frances best known wines, and up to 13 different grape varieties can be blended to produce it. Tesco is mainly Grenache and Syrah, with a small proportion of other varieties. Grenache is widely planted in the southern Rhône and produces herbal-flavoured wines that are full-bodied, although relatively light in colour. This rich, soft, but powerful wine is from the well-known Caves St Pierre near the small town of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Its a great match with turkey, duck and goose but it will also go well with nut roasts."

More info...
Storage instructions: This wine is ideal for drinking now but can be kept for up to 6 years

History: Les Caves Saint Pierre has remained in the Bouachon family for more than a century and they pride themselves on their reputation for making some of the best Châteauneuf-du-Pape in France. This renowned winegrowing region, bathed in sunlight, boasts soilscovered with large siliceous pebbles ("pudding stones") which create the famous "oven" effect. The 13 grape varieties grown in this unique terroir are united to achieve a harmonious blend with full and lasting flavours and a characteristic maturity.

Winemaking details: This wine is made using traditional vinification methods. It undergoes a long period in vat and is then matured in traditional oak barrels.

Definitely one to savour! If you can imagine drinking something with gorgeous smoothness, a texture reminiscent of velvet, you'll not be far off a Châteauneuf-du-Pape. One of my fave reds of all time.

I'm not too sure about the earthy smell with CNDP.
I've been told that the odour is typical of all old world wines and I did notice the same sort of whiff with some french merlot the other day.

Looks like I'm going to have to get a case of the stuff and force myself to drink it until I like it.
