Time to stock up on the quality 'slurps' for Christmas (along with Wolfblass Cabernet Sauvignon on offer at £4.48 also @ ASDA)

Chateauneuf Du Pape Grande Reserve 2009

Chateauneuf de Pape is the most well known Cru from the Cotes du Rhone. The blend combines more than 9 varietals but the main part of the "assemblage" is done with Grenache and Syrah. Taste: Strong fruit on the palate with hints of spice followed by a long elegant finish. From selected cellar and cuvee we create every year the Philippine de Saint-Cyrille blend with the aim of offering a complex and powerful wine to our customers.

For those interested in history: Châteauneuf-du-Pape can be seen from Avignon. Avignon is the place where for part of the 14th century, the Popes were, instead of Rome.

Regarding this deal: not voting since I don't know what the wine is like. I am however concerned about it being a 2009. Typically, a Châteauneuf-du-Pape is not meant to be drunk that young.

I only drink Grand Cru from St Emilion :{

Nice.

Not on offer in my local Asda!! :-(

To quote the renowned sommelier MCA ,
'Like a bottle of Chateau Neuf De Pape , I'm fine like wine when I start to rap'
Heat added , thanks for the Wolf Blass info as well --are they doing the Presidents Selections on offer as well?

Bought 6 £7 bottles when they did this last year and they weren't good at all. Someone told me they were far too young and to wait a few years, so I have 4 still sat in my wine rack. That was the 2008 year, these are the 2009, so don't expect a lot...

Then again they are selling their £20 version that is now £13 - apparently great to drink right away (leaving it to breath for half an hour first obviously).

Hope that helps.

You don't HAVE to drink it as your walk across Asda's car park! You could lay it down for a few years.

any CNDP for less than £10 is a pretty decent deal! Aldo have an award wining one for £9 so this is scorchio deal whoop whoop

I LOVE Chateau Neuf du Pape, it's one of my favourite wine - been drinking it since I left uni and started earning!

Must say it's not as smooth as some that you pay a bit more for..but for £7, can't complain.

Also bought a few bottles of WB yellow labels....can't resist a bargain.

Thanks OP for sharing!

Went to my local Asda at Queensferry on Saturday as this is one of my favourites. No such luck, 2009 Chataeuneuf scanned at £14.47 and staff reckoned never heard of the offer. Needless to say bottle went back on the shelf !!:(

There were none on the main shelf at local Asda but they had about 150 on an end display. Almost left thinking they didn't have it...

I read somehere that 2009 was a very good year for Chateauneuf and that prices were going through the roof. If that's true, it makes this deal very good indeed but as you say (or imply), it might be one to lay down for a few years rather than slurping it down immediately.
