timothyw9timothyw9

Android Phone, T-Mobile Rapport (Huawei U8180) now just £19, (half what I paid about 6 weeks ago :Z).

Can be unlocked for about £5 from eBay.

Fairly poor performacewise, but still a reasonable budget android.

I bought one of these yesterday and decided to root it and install Android 2.3.

I started out using the instructions on the XDX developers forum but had a few problems so thought I would post here what I did in case it helps anybody else.

    You will need the following:

    Superoneclick - I used v2.3.3 downloaded here

GooManager - GooManager_1.5.7_signed.apk Read below as I did not use this!!!

    CyanogenMod7

    Google Apps for CyanogenMod7

    Instructions (my comments in brackets)

Pre-requisite 1 Install ClockworkMod Recovery. The easiest method to flash ClockworkMod Recovery is via the ROM Manager application. .

Getting started with ROM Manager & ClockworkMod

Skip to Part B if you have already rooted your phone.

    •a) Rooting your phone

•Go to Settings -> Applications -> Development. Enable the option USB debugging, and wait for the debugging drivers to be automatically installed onto your PC.

•On your PC, download the latest release of super1click.( I used v2.3.3 link above)

•Run super1click and click the Root button. Follow all of the prompts given by the application, but make sure that you choose yes to the prompt on whether to install busybox.

•Continue to the next part when your phone is successfully rooted.

•b) Installing ROM Manager & ClockworkMod

    • Install ROM Manager from the Google Play store.

    • Open the ROM Manager application. Choose the option Flash ClockworkMod Recovery, and confirm the phone model as Huawei U8160.

•After downloading the recovery image, a Superuser prompt will ask you for permission for the application to have root access. You should Allow this action.

•ClockworkMod should now be flashed to your phone.

(This all worked fine for me)

    Pre-requisite 2
•Install the GooManager application from the Play store.

(This did not work at all. In the end I was able to install an old version 1.5.7 link at top by downloading it and copying it to the sdcard. I could then install it via file manager on the phone. Once I had done this I then tried to use it to complete the next instructions, but the GooManager failed every time it tried to download the ROM - My Guess is this step is not needed, but maybe it will work for you)

    INSTALLING THE UPGRADE

    Installation (first time/new users):

    •Open the GooManager application.

•Navigate to psyke83 -> roms -> u8160. (This was in the \dev folder but as stated I could not download)

•Click on the build you wish to install from the list.

•If needed, click the Download Gapps button to download the Google Apps package. The most recent (and most suitable) version will always be selected for you automatically.

•Click on the Download button to download the rom.

•Once the download(s) are complete, reboot into recovery and install the update package, followed by the Google Apps package.
•Important: if you are updating from a stock or custom ROM, choose the data wipe option before rebooting.

(OK the Goo Manager did not work at all for me so instead I just downloaded the Cyanogen Mod 7 package - link at top and copied it to the sdcard and used Rom Manager to install it. I checked the buttons to remove all data.)

(I then installed the Google Apps package in the same manner by downloading it - link at top, copying it to the sdcard and installing with Rom Manager. It instaled and on first use, was upgraded to Google Play)

    All Works Great!!!

Additional note - the ROMS are often updated and all of them for this device are available here

If you mouseover the ROM, then you get more info and can also see the build date of the ROM (US Format date e.g. 20120702 is 2nd July 2012)

There is also a helpful QR code for direct download to your phone.

Lots of help available for the 25th June build that is in my link at the top in this XDA thread,

not what i would descibe as positive selling points

I'm not trying to sell it, just giving my opinion, although I am running CM9 which is quite buggy on this phone anyway.

    Blimey. Grumpy or what.
The guy was only making light of the fact that the 'has it got a SD card slot' question is becoming the in joke on HUKD.
