You all remember the 07744 and then the 0844 with O2 fiasco, and since then, no real way to call abroad for cheap.

Well Lycatalk is an online company where you register and then just top up as much as you want and get cheap calls. For example, Pakistan is 2p, India is 2.5p, America is 0.5p and so on. They give you an 0208 access number with an account number and pin number to use. There is also an 0800 number which has a 0.5p surcharge.

All of these prices are per minute.

It's a bit like a phone card but the advantage is that you only pay for what you talk. No connection charge, no daily charge, and you can see all of your calls made online, top up online, etc.

Very useful for anyone who needs to regularly call abroad. I used to use this every day and since I've gotten married, my wife uses it nearly every day!

Check out http://www.lycatalk.com/res_rates.htm for rates for every country and then assess for yourself whether it's worth it or not.

I use another provider called Cheapestchat (just google). The way they work is you top up by only £ 1.-- at a time, via calling an 09xx number. You can then use your free mobile minutes to first call a London landline no. and then dial your destination no. Very reliable and no hassle.

You good people are right about cheaper rates being available when using a landline.
My understanding of the OP however is that this deal refers to using free minutes on your mobile to make cheap calls abroad.
Personally, I use a mixture of both.

Yes, it's via mobile.

Also, using 0844 charges you connection even if you don't get through. Sometimes it takes about 10 attempts to get through, 6p each time!

This is from mobile minutes, like PAYG, only use what you talk, plus like 0.5p to USA etc.

it's all too complicated

Register.

Top up £10.

Dial an access number each time you call.

Talk.

Where's complicated? Lol.

I use http://www.justdialstudent.com/ for my mobile. Its not super cheap, but the clarity is the best I've had. And you don't have to type in your pin. In fact you program the whole number straight into your contacts. No trying to remember pins & numbers malarkey.
