I've been doing some research to hire a car over Christmas and seem to have come across some good rates from Thrifty.

I live in Reading and just booked nine days rental of a Ford Focus sized car, from 23 - 31 December for £126.52. I was originally looking for a week, and could have had an economy car (Renault Clio or similar) for £84.06 all in (24 - 31 December).

This is significantly cheaper than all the other car rental firms I checked, and just over £10 a day for car hire seems like a bargain to me. I tried a couple of other locations and while anything London-based seems notably more expensive, some other towns are showing similar rates.

Please note: the deal doesn't include any additional insurance over the basic (I never take that anyway), but does include unlimited mileage so there shouldn't be any extra costs.

You have to pay up front to get the best rates, but you can cancel up to a week before without any penalty.

I am getting nothing like the rates you quote. Over £260 for a basic car for the dates you suggest.

I tried Enterprise - the same type of vehicle for the same 9-day period in Reading is coming up at £189, so it's still a fair bit more. I always usually use Enterprise, but not this time.

@diabeticguy - that's odd, I checked Reading and Nottingham this morning and both were coming up with the cheap rates. Whereabouts are you?

The nearest Thrifty to me is Brighton.

Just put in the details for that and it comes out at £200+. Blimey! Obviously there's some massive variation between locations! Sorry if I got your hopes up...

With Enterprise you have to follow the link from the offer banner on the website to get the Christmas deal. If you just input your travel dates they charge you the full rate. They do this with their weekend deal as well. The latter runs all year and is superb but do Thrifty beat that?
Thrifty are £2 cheaper for my Christmas rental and only a 20 minute walk away but Enterprise will pick me up from home, so swings and roundabouts for me. Enterprise are using a lot of hideous-to-drive Chevy vehicles just now though, and that puts me off...
