Am I being daft or can you take the 17" monitor off and get the base unit for like £120? Is it worth putting this through or can I wait until 2pm and get a further 10% off?
Nevermind I always forget about the £60 for shipping.
#3
So at this price, it's not wireless ready and doesn't have a modem.

I have just spoken with Dell you can get another 10 pounds knocked off by simply called them and really pushing hard lollzz

10% off by 2 p.m. is that really happening?

honestly speaking without the modem the deal has actually started looking NOT all that exciting :(

sorry

and it doesn't have a 40" free tv with it either, what are you expecting for this price?

Not many people use wireless on a desktop and even fewer people will use a dial up modem, AFAIK Dell desktops never come in a basic config these days with wireless or a modem so this one is no different from any other.
#7
you can get wireless adapters/cards for £15 and modems for £10, was going to recommend this to a friend before the £20 off!
#8
Great buy, might be worth getting or adding 2gb ram for vista's sake.

It doesn't have a 5.25" floppy disc drive either. How can anyone possibly think this is a HOT deal without these essential items being included?

Chill.

It was more of a question because I'm not that UP on computer building, etc.
I have a base unit, that's on it's way out, which has wireless as it's in my upstairs office. I'm looking at replacing it and this could be the one.

Thanks for confirming.

You can add wireless for like a tenner nyway. This pc is most likely more than a tenner cheaper than the competiton.

Sorry excuse my ignorance but what would I need to buy to connect to the internet for this pc, thanx

If you're talking broadband then everything you need comes with the broadband itself usually. If you want it wireless then you'll need to add a wireless adapter for about a tenner.

Note that the base model DOES NOT include a DVD writer.

It seems to be a CD writer and DVD player. Text says:

* 48x CDRW/DVD Combo Drive [Included in Price]

For those that want to create DVDs you will need to choose the option

* 16x DVD +/- RW Drive [add £9.00]

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E4600 Processor (2.40GHz,800MHz,2MB cache) [add £80.00]

Is this worth it guys?

Just realised that's ex vat too so it's nearer £100 extra! All the extras are ex vat so add on 17.5% when working out if it's a good thing to add.

But then you are adding HALF the price of the whole system JUST for a faster processor and I think it ceases to be a good deal.

Increasing the memory from 1Gb to 2Gb (just over £30) is probably the cheapest way of getting a performance increase.

But like all Dell deals, you add a bit here (£20), and another bit there (£30) and all of sudden the PC is a £100 more expensive.

Note that these price DO NOT include VAT, that is added at the end.

i just got a £500 vostro delivered yesterday! drat and double drat!

I think the "base" model (with perhaps a DVD writer added) is a great deal.

I built a PC in February and used an E2180 and the CPU cost me £53, 2Gb of memory cost me £30, the case cost me £40, and motherboard cost me £59. That alone comes to £182.

I also had to buy Windows Vista, DVD writer, a hard disk, and a graphics card.

If you want a good basic Vista PC then to get the whole system for less than £200 is an excellent deal.

What's a dialup modem?

You can add a 24” monitor for £195 after the 10% and Quidco discounts.
It’s the E248WFP which I’ve seen in action and was impressed and it should be better than the typical budget 24” monitor with VGA only input; only 1 year warranty though.
Note: the PC doesn’t have a DVI output.

Would this onboard graphic card be better than my old AGP ATI RADEON 9600 PRO ?..

So is there a way to use the voucher to get a good deal on a core 2 duo this afternoon?

Thanks. If you’re buying a modem check that it supports Vista as I think the Creative model was XP only and there’s possibly lots of old stock around that doesn’t support Vista.

Dont think of it as delivery. Dell do this to make the PC seem cheap.

If they offered free delivery then they would just add £60 to the price of the PC.

You pay either way.

Anyway, without delivery it would be £102.23 and methinks they may well make a loss on it.

Are some people confusing desktop specs with laptop specs? Only laptops normally come with a dial-up modem and Wireless these days. This is because most households with PC's have broadband these days. The broadband modems are either USB that plug into the PC's USB port or Routers that plug into the network port. As the broadband modems come free with the vast majority of UK packages they are never included with the machines.

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E6550 processor (2.33GHz, 1333MHz, 4MB cache) with 2GB Ram for £333 any good?

EDIT - And a 128MB ATI® Radeon™ HD 2400 Pro graphics card and 16x DVD +/- RW Drive

Assuming that it'll come down to around £300 with the 10% off code.
#35
Will the 10% discount be pre vat or after vat
#36
Hi, noobie here

I was wondering, if I select a package that takes the price up to around £240, should i try to add another £60s worth as I would be paying that on delivery anyway? Is that how it works?

Also, If I am to spend £300 would this still be a good deal or could i get something better?

Thanks

Welcome to hukd!

I think add another £60 worth of stuff, the £300 trigger is after VAT I think so you want something like £250 before VAT I think.

Should be a good deal, not sure how the 10% will work, whether before or after VAT or if you'll have to spend more in order to keep the free delivery.

Dell has a special offer on every St Patrick’s Day where they forego delivery for UK residents provided you are prepared to swim home with your system strapped to your waist. They don’t suggest trying this with Server systems and it’s against the rules to build a raft from empty Guinness cans to aid your journey. It’s probably not wise to imbibe too much of the black nectar before commencing your journey also.

If you don’t fancy that you can increase the spec to £299 to qualify for free delivery.
