What upgrade entitlement is this and when and how will it happen?

As the OP stated - windows 7 upgrade can upgrade from xp or vista so as long as you already have that on your target computer you will be fine.
So basically he is saying that the upgrade isnt directly linked to the copy of Vista that was bought to get the upgrade, but any legal copy of Vista/XP can be used to perform the upgrade with.
Therefore if you own Vista already - you buy this then sell the second copy of Vista or even sell the original version and then use the upgrade yourself with your "2nd" copy of Vista.
Should be fine in theory and you get the upgrade for what you pay minus what you can sell one of your (now) 2 copies of Vista for.
I am not sure if this is what you meant, but you cant actually upgrade from XP to Windows 7.
You can BUY an upgrade from XP to Windows 7, but you will have to do a clean install (wipe the disk and "start again").

Yeah I meant you can use the upgrade with either vista or xp but will have to do a clean install with xp and might even have to do a clean install with xp as the actua versions you can upgrade from are very limited.

I doubt this plan would work. Surely you would need the vista on your pc and then use the win7 upgrade disk to upgrade.
MS will surely then invalidate the original vista key
so how will you use the win7 upgrade without vista on your pc?
i sold mine on ebay for £100 today buy it now, no numbers made up
i bought mine before september 1st so i get a full copy of windows 7 ultimate, but like i posted if you already have vista or xp on your computer and wish to upgrade this would potentially be the cheapest option
I'll stick with my win7 premium for £40 from pcworld thanks ;-)
Ebay has a cost for both listing and delivery, and theres the chance you'll get scammed.
For me this deal has too much messing about.
Keep it simple, if it's the cheapest out there great. :)
If you have to rob Paul to pay Peter and there's a chance Percy might rob you, it's not a deal for me! :p

The moment you sell your copy of Vista to somebody else, you need to erase your Windows Vista from your computer. If you keep it and install the upgrade (which is only valid to the person who owns the original copy of Vista) you are committing an illegal act. You might as well download a pirated Windows 7 copy and save yourself the hassle (which of course is also illegal).
PS. I doubt that you will get anything for Vista for much longer, certainly not £100
