In store, the Chimay multipack of their three core varieties of beer, Red (Dubbel, 7% ABV), Blue (Belgian Strong Dark Ale, 9%), and White (Tripel, 8%). 2 330ml bottles of each, plus a Chimay branded glass.

One of seven trappist monk-brewed beers in the world, all three are regarded as among the world's finest beers.

Tesco charges £1.80 for the Red (weakest, and therefore cheapest because beer is taxed by alcohol strength), specialist beer dealers charge £2, £2.10, and £2.20 , so a good price for the beer alone is £12. The glass, which is essential for proper enjoyment of Belgian beer, is about £2.50-£3 worth. They also have a box with just 6*Red + glass at the same price, but obviously this is a better deal.

These beers are generally not discounted, so this is a good price. Only thing is I now have half-a-dozen spare glasses.....

Well I've had a couple of bottles this evening, and I'd say so yes. Delicious.

FWIW, Belgian beer is not like Special Brew; rather, the stronger the beer, the more complex and tasty the beer. Mmmmmmm, alcohol.

I remember the pre Euro days when a booze trip to a Belgian supermarket would get you this wonderful stuff for 50p a bottle. Gotta drink it with full respect otherwise it will catch you by surprise (as I found to my cost.... oh what a fool I made of myself)

£5 for 4 on Chimay Red in Threshers at the moment

Do they still have the beer in ceramic effect glass bottles? Heat added --anything from Belgium(Hoegaarden be thy name) is THE MASTER --compared to the insipid p1sh made by Carling ,et al

This stuff is very nice - discovered when beer exploring in Tesco (i.e. when I buy as much stuff as I can that I've never heard of)

Ok I'm game!

Chimay, Westmalle, Orval, Rochefort, Westvleteren and Achel
( haven't tasted the Westvleteren yet, maybe some day)

Well Done

Achel was the one I hadn't heard of before, I think it might have been revived but its definitely trappist. I don't think Westvleteren is sold in any shops its not brewed all the time and when it is apparently queues of cars form at the monastery. if you ever find yourself in Brussels you can drink it here

http://www.deliriumcafe.be/

They have all the Westvleterens they come in plain bottles with no labels the only difference is the colour of the bottle tops and as they sell 2000 beers it sometimes takes them a while to find your selection the menu is the size of a telphone directory!
