but a serious question ......is the extra for a blue ray disc worth it rather than a DVD? ie. on my set up a DVD looks a perfect picture to me......... I would honestly like to know what all the hype about blue-ray is about? Thanks

However I'm still dubious about getting very old films (and TV series) in Bluray vs DVD. Is it really worth it?

It depends on sitting distance relative to screen size. I think there is a big difference, sitting at around 8 foot from a 50". To notice 720p on a 32" set it is best sitting less than 10", for 1080p you will need to be around 5-6".
I know a lot of people who buy a 26-32" TV, then sit 14 foot away and say HD is overrated. Probably because no one would be able to tell a difference at that range.

Almost always. If it's from a 4k scan and not had loads of edge enhancement or digital noise reduction then you can't really go wrong. If it has then it's a disappointment but it will still usually have advantages over it's DVD counterpart.
I have this one at home, I can't say I've gone over it with a fine tooth comb but I was pleased with the picture quality. £6 isn't to be scoffed at.
