I think this is the cheapest this has ever been. One of the best foreign films ever made. Don't forget 7.5% Quidco as well to get it a bit cheaper.

Description:

Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues) is just another 11 year-old boy in Cidade de Deus, a suburb on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. He grows up observing the exploits of the Tender Trio--Shaggy, Clipper and Goose--a group of small-time hoodlums. Lil Dice (Douglas Silva) moves into the neighborhood, a kid the same age who already dreams of being Rio de Janeiro's most dangerous criminal. His wicked nature becomes evident early in life. He runs errands for the local outlaws. He admires Shaggy and his gang, who hold up gas trucks and commit other petty crimes. Shaggy gives Lil Dice the opportunity to kill for the first time... and Lil Dice never looks back.

By the 1970s, Lil Dice has changed his name to Lil Ze (Leandro Firmino da Hora) and has taken over the area's drug-dealing business. Rocket, too frail and scared to become an outlaw, but also too smart to be content with an underpaid job, discovers he can see reality with a different eye: the eye of an artist. Eventually, he becomes a professional photographer, which is his redemption. By the early 1980s, gang warfare has completely taken over the ghetto. Which, if any, of these colourful characters will make it out alive?

Great film. Not for the faint hearted though. Watching seven year old children shooting each other freaked me out.

Absoloutley superb film, if not the best i have ever seen. As above, not for the faint hearted as the murder rate is by the minute.
#6
Ditto to all of the above, a really great film.

Shame this wasn't a few days ago, I'd have bought it for someone's Christmas.

OH, and agree with everyone here, it's a great film (to my mind, the best of the last decade or so).

I paid £8.99 for this in the play.com summer sale and though that price was a bargin! £3.99 is a STEAL I tell ya! :viking:

Well everyone who doesn't buy it owes it to themselves to catch it on TV. Saw it at the cinema when it was released and it still gets a regular spin in my DVD player.

Bought this a couple of years ago. It is a terrific movie. The thought of watching a movie with subtitles might put you off but trust me it's great!

I use IMDB when judging to go watch/rent DVD's. It's very good and surprisingly accurate.

City Of God is ranked 18th best film ever made.

Exactly the same as me :) I've even started voting on there when I watch a movie as well.

Yep, highly recommended. Some stunning films in that list.

Also search by "votes by decade" (e.g. http://imdb.com/chart/2000s) to bring up some more that are not in the top 250.

I also recommend any films from Brazilian director Walter Sales all of which are stunning to watch.

It's on Channel 4 on Wednesday, 27 December 2006 at 23:05.

As I have spent in excess of £500 I think I will watch this one on realtime tv.

even more impressive when you think none of the cast were professional actors but people who lived in the favellas

Watched this last night. Really good show indeed. Wasn't quite as gory as I thought it would be, but the documentary on the DVD was pretty eye-opening.

La Haine is another great one to look out for, watched it again the other night as I managed to pick it up on hd dvd, forgot how good it was
