Collect two tokens from participating newspapers, stick them to a form you get from the website, hand them in at a staffed station to get your Rover ticket, then travel all day for £10. Or make a weekend of it for £17.50.

You can travel anywhere on the Northern Network on any day (Mon-Sun), however, if you like your vintage Diesel Hauled trains, you can catch the 10:04 from Preston (Mon-Fri) all the way to Carlisle (via Barrow, arr Carlisle 14:26) along the spectacular Cumbrian Coast, hauled by some DRS Class 37's on lease to Northern. Spend a few hours in Carlisle then either travel back along the Coast again or pay extra for the Virgin Pendelino along the WCML.

See here for Class 37 workings:

w w w .class37info.co.uk/sum2016.aspx

Pro-Tip: if it's a hot day, be prepared to sweat like a pregnant nun; the coaches are Mk.2's which have no opening windows, instead they rely on cooling from the engine, but when I went in July this didn't seem to be working.

Travel up to 21st November, so the inverse problem may be apparent.

Enjoy!

Southerners like me can't take up this offer as we don't get northern newspapers. The north / south divide has just grown an inch or two more :|

You continue to live in your overpriced houses and drive on your over congested roads and somehow feel superior.

Hmm correct, for some reason I thought the Mk.1/2/3 ones were the Pre-Intercity ones you see on heritage lines. :)

I've worked it out we can leave Bradford on 06.17 to preston , catch the class 37 up the cumbrian coast to Carlisle , spend a couple of hours there and get the settle and Carlisle back and he home for 9pm . That's even with the bus replacement to Appleby ( I know my train stuff me ) taken into consideration . Not a bad day out for a tenner . Would kill me but earn me millions of brownie points with the boy

Offa built a dyke , Hadrian built a wall , when will Watford come good on that gap ?

I've looked into this - it seems that there is a continuous rail network across the British mainland, built by some people calling themselves "The Victorians". So you could catch a train up to to the Northern Network area then proceed onwards taking advantage of this offer? This would make the most sense for the £17.50 weekend offer as you'd pack for railway travel and use trains throughout, just like in days gone by.

I'm perfectly fine with them, in fact it would be a bonus to see one.

I know what happens when you drive a ~200 Ton train into one of them at nearly 100mph. Clue: nothing. (_;)

There's also lots of stuff to do near the Settle-Carlisle line including an outdoor pool at Lazonby for the summer months. :)

I'm actually doing this on Monday. The normal cheapest way of doing this is with a Cumbria Day Ranger ticket @ £41.90, so a tenner is a bargain. FYI my itinerary:
Lancaster 1025 to Barrow 1133

Barrow 1140 to Carlisle 1426

Carlisle 1433 to Appleby 1533 (BUS)

Appleby 1543 to Skipton 1653

Skipton 1721 to Lancaster 1835

You put lime in your lager generally

If it's anywhere on the northern network why can't you use it on Virginia trains from Carlisle to Preston? It's still part of the northern network

Could be worse, could live in the middle of cumbria where you can't use the local station as its only on the west coast main line and you can't buy any of the newspapers as they are not local !!!!

Can anyone recommend a good itinerary from Newcastle for a day out using this deal and possibly combining the old locomotives shown above? My little lad loves trains but saying that we don't want to spend a the whole day travelling on a train

Worrying about comfort in coaches , what about poor driver in his noisy and extremely draughty cab even makes CL 66 seem luxurious
Voted hot though great find
#36
"Poor driver" in his air conditioned vintage Diesel cab with panoramic views of the Cumbrian Coast. (_;)

I bet it's the best route to work in the UK!
