Hud: I'm documenting.

Cloverfield is one of the most exciting and frightening sci-fi horrors of the last decade. A wobbly-rollercoaster ride that weaves its rickety way through darkened subways and exploding skyscrapers to avoid the powerful, terrifying and destructive force that has New York City under attack. Matt Reeves' monster-horror combines suspense, terror and explosions within its sudden, claustrophobic, and tension-filled scenes of desperate New Yorkers struggling to stay alive.

Rob's (Michael Stahl-David) impending trip to Tokyo is put on hold when, during his going away party, a devastating and frightening presence starts to destroy the city. As the explosions, screams and devastation increase, Rob, his brother Jason (Mike Vogel) and their group of friends face the most difficult decision of their lives. As Rob's long-term friend and current love interest Beth (Odette Yustman) is trapped alone in her apartment on the other side of the city, do they attempt to save themselves and flee the city to safety or head further in to the ruin and save Beth?

High-def digest review

The moment I walked out of the theater back in January, I began to wonder how 'Cloverfield' would handle the transition to high-def disc. Honestly, I imagined a blurry, noisy mess akin to ’28 Days Later,’ a sub-par release that failed to provide a substantial upgrade over its standard DVD counterpart. I certainly didn’t expect a sharp and attractive transfer that renders every shard of rubble with a level of care afforded to the best BD titles on the market.

Presented with a striking 1080p/VC-1 transfer, 'Cloverfield' looks wonderful. The film’s undersaturated palette isn’t meant to explode off the screen, but the image is blessed with strong primaries and incredibly natural skintones. The orange haze of fire and the yellow smear of streetlights look especially remarkable, giving each scene a distinct (yet consistent) tone. Black levels may be slightly uneven at times (the tunnel scenes falter a bit), but dark expanses and shadows are deep and well-delineated throughout the majority of the film. Better still, the level of fine object defies the conventions of the film’s camcorder gimmick and produces a series of astonishing textures and crisp edges. Sure, there are intentional bursts of static and softness littered throughout the production, but these irregularities always register as enhancements to the tone of the film rather than distractions from the picture quality. Best of all, there isn’t any edge enhancement, major crushing, or significant artifacting to be found. There are light swarms of source noise in the darkest scenes, but nothing that undermines the overall quality of the transfer.

If any relative charge can be leveled against this transfer it’s that it doesn’t pack quite the same wow factor as glossier Blu-ray releases. As it stands, this gritty creature-feature isn’t the greatest thing I’ve ever seen crash across my screen, but it genuinely shattered my expectations. Considering its filmmakers worked overtime to make it look like something captured on a handheld camera, this Blu-ray presentation of 'Cloverfield' is an impressive sight to behold.

Probably the worst film I've ever seen. People were literally streaming out after 40 minutes or so.

I took my then girlfriend to see it and assumed it would be great as I love most everything JJ Abraham's does. She never let me pick a film to see in the cinema ever again. Horrific film but a good price if you like crap films.

Great price, although not sure the 'trampled on' design was a great choice for a steelbook lol

Grossly overrated

They were threatening to make a cloverfield 2... hope that has been shelved. If I was to watch it again, I'd probably skip the first 20 minutes of faff.

Super 8 was better imo.

Definitely up there in the top ten worst ever.

Blu-ray isn't just about picture quality but also sound quality.

It can't be worse than Paranormal Activity and Attack the Block. Have only watched a few minutes of this, more found footage nonsense presumably. But it's in a gorgeous Steelbook and at that price I couldn't say no.

Me too (buying it). I thought the premise of them continuously filming whilst in danger was a bit daft but the comments about it being the worst film ever are even more dafter.

I quite liked it, sure it's not the best but I see plenty of films each year that are way worse than this. Steelbook is very nice as well.

I thought was a v good movie. 7.1 on IMDB so the haters are in the minority...

Was ok but really not a fan of Shaky Camera films.

Made me feel sea sick after watching it for a while when it was on TV. Switched it off.

That's what happens when you watch TV on a ship.

This film hasn't got bad reviews - 74 on Rotten Tomatoes, 7.1 on IMDb and 64 on Metacritic. I'm not sure that qualifies it for the worst film ever but horses for courses of course. I admit, I was ready to switch it off after 20 mins but then came the BOOOOM! and the film transformed into a pretty decent horror in my opinion.

If you can get a tin of paint for this price or cheaper, I'd get that instead and open the lid and watch it slowly dry.

Didn't think they made a sequel ...

Attack The Block definately one of the worst.

Cloverfield if made by the team who make Tracy Beaker.

I thought it was good but the shaky camera effect made me want to hurl, had to keep pausing the film and taking a break.

Yep they did

Doesn't have any re-watch value in my opinion. I was blown away and enjoyed the roller coaster ride it offered that ONE TIME but knowing what it's all about and what happens at what point ... that initial buzz is gone.

If you haven't seen it yet, you might as well just buy a copy at this price point!

I don't do ship's ;)

It's annoying enough seeing people on YouTube without tripods but an entire movie like this?! Makes your eyes go funny!

Agreed, absolutely shocking film. One of the worst endings ever
