what about this for a 9 year old who's really getting in to his keyboard and I'd getting an iPad air. It's only £39 and do I need a USB camera connector for the iPad?

That one has mini keys, not great for proper playing. If the kid will start learning, better get something bigger and with full sized keys. And yes, you'll need an adaptor in most cases. Such as: http://www.gear4music.com/Keyboards-and-Pianos/M-Audio-Keystation-49-II-USB-Controller/ZNJ:

All in one workstations are usually best for starters - this is only £60 and has full keys, no messing with ipads:

In terms of the number of keys and the functionality they're pretty much equivalent. The Akai has actual press-able keys and is cheaper so I'd say that one was a better fit for you. The more likely use case for the CME is musicians who want a portable keyboard to throw in a bag when they go on a trip.

If your little one is really keen and not just on a fad which they may drop, it might be worth spending a bit more for a keyboard with more keys. 25 keys will get you two octaves, which is just about ok for two handed playing but very limiting. I would say take a look at a 37 key unit as a minimum.

Have a look at this one:

£59 https://www.amazon.co.uk/IK-Multimedia-IP-IRIG-KEYS37-Keyboard-Controller/dp/B015QUPU9Y

or possibly this one:
£37 https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/5n2/M-Audio-Keystation-Mini-32-Keyboard-Synth-Action-Velocity-Sensitive/B00IWRJSE2

Also, bear in mind that these are controller keyboards, not 'pianos'. They will not make any sound without an iPad and yes, you will need the camera connector.

He has a big keyboard which he carries to school for his lessons. He also loves messing with apps and sounds etc..

I was thinking of something he can put in a laptop bag and just get out when he wants to serenade us or his girlfriends... I'm really struggling for presents this year as I spoil him but am a bit skint.

I'm hoping he'll write the music to the video game I'm making lol

Edit: sorry, the context is slightly off. See below for what I'm referring to.

Expired, but you can find these on ebay and they are well made. I have one. Rather a fiddle to setup for wireless (you need extra software and some patience) but if you buy a midi/usb converter you've got a nice compact keyboard for next to nothing.

Still says they have some, not sure why you think it's expired?

Dammit I didn't paste the link. "Expired" refers to something else... :)
